ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The incumbent must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) within three (3) months of appointment. The Florida Forest Service will cover the majority of the cost associated with attaining the required CDL training and the initial CDL test when administered at an agency authorized CDL training center. Occasional to moderate travel required. Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to lift 40 lbs unaided and able to work at height of 100 ft or more in aerial lifts JOB DUTIES: Responsible for execution of seed production and tree improvement programs related to resource management and involving operation, inspection and maintenance of a variety of equipment such as farm tractors, front-end loaders, bucket trucks, tree shakers, stake-body trucks, forklifts, pesticide application equipment, pickup trucks and cone/seed processing equipment. Performs site preparation, location layout, establishment and maintenance of seed orchards, progeny tests, clone banks and archive banks. Maintains and updates records using paper, tablets, and computers. Performs all phases of cone collection/processing and seed processing such as but not limited to: tree shaking, operating cone kiln dryer, loading/unloading crates, trays, and bins, operating dewinger, crippen, seed sizer, aspirator, moisture meter, gravity table, x-ray machine and film processor. Performs pine tree breeding activities such as: collecting scion material, top grafting, bagging flowers, collecting pollen, pollinating flowers, monitoring cone development, collecting cones and extracting seed. Establishes potted root stock, collects scion material and performs grafting of scion material to root stock. Transplants potted grafts to appropriate field location. Performs propagation activities such as: collecting, preparing, planting and transplanting rooted cuttings. Under direct supervision of a State of Florida licensed Pesticide Applicator, applies pesticides as needed in a safe and efficient manner. Ensures spray equipment is operating properly and safely. Monitors, maintains and transplants propagated plants of all types. Distributes Andrews Nursery seedlings to the customers and maintains records. Performs maintenance, cleaning and minor repairs or modifications on equipment and buildings of Blackwater Forestry Center and the Munson Seed Orchard. Assists the Timber Management and Ecology Units on the Blackwater River State Forest accomplish tasks such as timber marking, timber cruising, boundary line marking, tree planting, prescribed burning, invasive exotic treatment, and red cockaded woodpecker management. Performs other related work as assigned.
