Forestry Technician
Summary These positions are located in Grants Pass and Medford, Oregon. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of technical forestry work in support of forestry programs and activities. Salary Range for GS-05: $39,576 - $51,446 Salary Range for GS-06: $44,117 - $57,354 Salary Range for GS-07: $49,025 - $63,733 Responsibilities Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. Promotion to the full performance level is neither guaranteed nor implied and will be based solely on your ability to satisfactorily perform the work of the position, existing work at the higher grade level, and recommendation by the position's supervisor. This position works as a member of the Field Office's Timber or Silviculture forestry group, providing technical assistance to the area Foresters in Timer or Silviculture management. As the Forestry Technician in this position, you will: Assist with the preparing and administering forest development projects including planting/reforestation or commercial timber sales. Inspect contracts for planting, brushing, pre-commercial and commercial thinning, tree marking, cone collections, and stand exam plots. Conduct forest stand surveys, inventories and assessments, measure trees, evaluate trees and areas, record data for reforestation and subsequent stand maintenance treatments and make recommendations; layout of unit boundaries with flagging, tagging and GPS. Mark timber with tree paint using established marking guides and specific instructions. Collect non-commercial and commercial forest stand data, update forested stand inventory records and data, create and maintain files in GPS and GIS and physical data files. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and/or education requirements described below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying. GS-05: A. Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sector) performing 2 or more of the following: 1) collecting forest inventory or field data to document findings for higher level review; 2) assisting senior forestry technicians in gathering information for preparing the forestry portion of routine planning or environmental clearance documents; 3) utilizing computer programs, software applications, or geospatial equipment to provide administrative support work associated with forestry programs. OR B. Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education. OR C. Combination: Successful completion of an equivalent combination of the specialized experience stated in A and education stated in B. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience. Determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required in A. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for B. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must submit transcripts for verification. GS-06: A. Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sector) performing 2 or more of the following: 1) assisting in gathering resource information used to prepare the forestry portion of planning documents; 2) conducting segments of forest inventories or timber stand examinations; 3) performing conventional forestry support duties such as administering contracts, forest plantings, thinning, forest disease and insect control, unit layout, etc. as directed by senior forestry technicians and/or foresters. OR B. Education: Successful completion of 1 full year of graduate level education which included courses directly related to the work of the position such as: forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education. OR C. Combination: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience. To calculate your combined amount, first determine the amount of your specialized experience as a percentage of the requirement listed in A above. Then determine the amount of your education as a percentage of the requirement listed in B above; then add the two percentages. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education. GS-07: A. Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sector) performing 2 or more of the following: 1) drafting segments of routine planning or environmental documents; 2) performing timber sale reconnaissance or unit design for proposed timber sale tracts; 3) providing advice, assistance, or training to lower graded technicians; 4) providing data collection (i.e., timber cruises, sample surveys, field surveys, etc.) support for timber sales or forest stand inventory. OR B. Education: Successful completion of 1 full year of graduate level education which included courses directly related to the work of the position such as: forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education. OR C. Combination: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience. To calculate your combined amount, first determine the amount of your specialized experience as a percentage of the requirement listed in A above. Then determine the amount of your education as a percentage of the requirement listed in B above; then add the two percentages. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education. Status merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-05 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-06 level. One year at the GS-06 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. (Must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade. No award SF-50 will be accepted). Additional Information Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service). Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally. You must be eligible to obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office, but primarily conducts frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, driving, riding, stooping, bending, lifting, and walking in steep, brushy and physically arduous terrain. Working Conditions: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air-conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, ambient smoke from regional wildfires, rough terrain, insects, snakes, bees, ticks, poison oak, and other hazards are common. The work may occasionally require working at heights. The incumbent carefully adheres to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.
