Join us. **Job Summary:** The key role of an Engineering Specialist – Technical Regulatory Compliance working in the Functional Safety and Risk Assessment team is to facilitate activities and provide crucial guidance and training to various systems integration team and product groups. This position contributes to Enterprise regulatory compliance teams, develops solutions for complex technical engineering problems, and may be accountable for the design or improvement of complex systems or processes. In addition to demonstrating technical expertise, a person in this position may be called on to act as a team and/or project leader. The major focus of this role is on technical delivery, and the incumbent must demonstrate the ability to understand and analyze complex machine control system designs and software architectures and become familiar with various industry standards. The successful candidate will direct work with other units, suppliers, customers, and teams; and requires the incumbent demonstrate skill in negotiation, building consensus, and achieving compromise. Impact of decisions made by this position may be far-reaching, to include the project team or immediate work group, division, and/or business unit, suppliers, internal and external customers, and Caterpillar markets. Decisions may significantly impact product safety, warranty, patents, products or processes, technology, costs, sales, and customer perceptions. Success factors for the Engineering Specialist – Technical Regulatory Compliance are strong communication, spatial and conceptual design skills, and an understanding of customers’ needs and product application. Major challenges facing incumbents are keeping up to date with regulatory compliance requirements and technology and developing increased technical breadth and/or depth. Responsibilities of this position demand that the incumbent understand complex technical problems and demonstrate the ability to develop creative solutions. Technical leadership skills are essential. Though the focus of the job is technical contribution, project management skills may be required. **What You Will Do:** The Engineering Specialist – Technical Regulatory Compliance position is a role in a specialized field that contributes to Enterprise regulatory compliance and safety teams, as well as committees or groups outside of the company. This position is focused on providing Control System Functional Safety and Machinery Product Safety Risk Assessment support. It's expected that the incumbent will either be an externally Certified Functional Safety Engineer or will be trained and seek this certification during the assignment. Specific duties include understanding, interpreting and participating in the development of various international standards, engaging in advocacy efforts on regulatory policies, conducting training for internal product system or component teams, facilitating control system safety assessments and product safety risk assessments, participating in design reviews and consulting with engineering design teams, auditing hardware and software assessments and participating in projects to further improve efficiency of the work group. This role has several peers performing similar activity in support of all Caterpillar products, who all report to a Functional Safety and Risk Assessment manager in Caterpillar's Product Compliance and Support organization. _Job Duties:_ • Understand and stay current on product regulatory requirements, and related technology requirements, and understand application of same to Caterpillar products. • Follow and utilize established processes and tools to collect, assess, and manage information in support of product certification and compliance. • Identify continuous improvement opportunities for processes and tools used to manage product regulatory compliance risks. • Collaborate with product groups, design control and operations to ensure the development, validation and production of product that meets applicable product regulatory requirements. **Education Requirement:** • Requires a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Agricultural or Controls Engineering or Computer Science. **What Skills You Will Have:** **Product Safety Development Guidance:** • Describes the concepts behind product safety best practices. • Identifies the expected benefits of implementing best practices. • Encourages use of documented best practices and their relevance to achieving safety performance requirements. • Maintains written guidance and training documentation relevant to application of safety control systems. **Risk Identification and Evaluation** • Helps product groups identify all hazards to people related to the interaction with our products. • Facilitates product risk assessment though use of corporate risk assessment tools. • Provides training for product risk assessment activities. • Provides the link between product risk assessment and safety performance requirements for the product. **Collaborating:** • Demonstrates experience participating in productive collaborative processes. • Demonstrates the ability to collaborate with diverse teams across many regions and time zones. • Helps to ensure proper working interaction between multiple systems hardware/software and product group teams responsible for development of control systems. • Assists in communicating shared goals with diverse groups and parties. **Product Design and Development:** • Communicates with professionals to understand various requirements of product design. • Communicates design choice benefits, and consideration of alternatives. • Experience in control systems testing or development. **Compliance and Conformance:** • Provides guidance in the development of control system architecture to meet requirements of relevant international standards. • Provides guidance for following a robust software development process that meets the requirements of relevant international standards. • Communicates design choice benefits, and consideration of alternatives. • Audits the safety control system design and supporting documentation to ensure the functions meet requirements and are appropriate. • Serves as a risk advisor for product group related to meeting regional requirements for conformance. **Additional Information** The location for this position is Peoria, IL. Relocation assistance is not available for this position. Any relocation costs incurred would be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
