SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, provides direct educational services to deaf and hard of hearing students, particularly in the areas of language skills: listening comprehension, speech, speech reading, vocabulary, reading, and written expression; works closely with school staff toward successful mainstreaming of deaf and hard of hearing students to the greatest extent appropriate.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of specialized methods of teaching language, reading, writing, speech, speechreading, listening vocabulary, and concept development s to deaf and hard of hearing students. Thorough knowledge of unique social and emotional needs of deaf and hard of hearing students and their families. Ability to work with parents and other professionals and support personnel in developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEP) for each deaf and hard of hearing student. Fluency in sign language and/or cued speech skills preferred. Completion of MCPS Elementary Teacher Test, for self-contained positions. Completion of MCPS Secondary Teacher Test, for hearing impaired teacher position.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in deaf education; master's degree preferred. D/HOH Special Class and Resource Itinerant Teachers: At least 1-2 years successful classroom teaching experience preferred. D/HOH Toddler Teacher: At least 1-2 years successful experience working with infants and toddlers 0-3 years of age preferred.
