Posting Number NONAC3510 Job Title Garnishment Specialist Position Title Garnishment Specialist Position Type Non-Faculty Number of vacancies 1 Salary Department Office of Finance and Operations Position Summary The Garnishment Specialist is responsible for the management, processing, and administration of employee garnishments, including wage garnishments, child support, tax levies, and other court-ordered deductions. The role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to garnishments and works closely with the payroll team to ensure accurate deductions from employees’ paychecks. The Garnishment Specialist must maintain confidentiality, manage sensitive data, and keep track of garnishment documentation while communicating with employees and external agencies regarding garnishment-related matters.  The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, knowledgeable about garnishment laws, and skilled in communicating effectively with employees and external agencies to resolve issues and ensure timely and accurate deductions. This position will also assist with payroll processing when required.

Skills:

Strong knowledge of garnishment processing, deductions, and compliance. Attention to detail and accuracy when processing garnishments and maintaining records. Ability to communicate effectively with employees, legal authorities, and external agencies. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.



Key Responsibilities

Garnishment Processing:

Review, process, and track employee garnishment orders (wage garnishments, child support, tax levies, etc.). Ensure garnishments are calculated accurately based on court orders or legal directives and that deductions are made under federal, state, and local laws. Input garnishment details into the payroll system and ensure accurate deductions from employees’ paychecks.
Compliance Requirements:

Stay current with federal, state, and local garnishment laws and regulations to ensure compliance. Work closely with legal departments or external agencies (child support enforcement agencies, IRS) to ensure the proper handling of garnishments. Assist in ensuring that garnishment-related processes comply with legal guidelines and avoid penalties or over-deductions.
Employee Communication & Support:

Respond to employee inquiries regarding garnishments, providing clear explanations of the garnishment process, calculations, and any applicable fees. Work with employees to address issues related to garnishments, including helping them understand deductions and the implications of garnishment on their pay or modifications to deductions.
Documentation & Recordkeeping:

Maintain accurate records of all garnishment orders, payments, and correspondence for auditing and reporting purposes. Ensure all garnishment-related documents are kept confidential and securely stored in compliance with privacy laws and company policies. Prepare and submit reports on garnishment deductions as requested by management or external authorities.
Coordination with Legal or External Agencies:

Coordinate with external agencies such as child support enforcement, tax authorities, and legal counsel to ensure garnishments are processed according to court orders and regulations. Handle communications with external parties to resolve discrepancies or issues related to garnishment payments and documentation.
Reporting & Reconciliation:

Prepare and submit periodic reports on garnishments to management, finance, or legal departments. Reconcile garnishment payments against payroll records to ensure accuracy and timely remittance to appropriate agencies. Handle adjustments are processed correctly if there are any discrepancies. Minimum Qualifications An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Human Resources, or a related field is a plus. 5  years of experience in payroll or multiple state garnishments  Strong knowledge of garnishment laws and regulations (e.g., wage garnishments, child support, tax levies). Experience using payroll ERP Software (Workday, ADP, Ceridian, or similar).


Preferred Qualifications Certification in payroll or garnishment (CPP, FPC). Experience working with multi-state garnishments. Familiarity with legal documents and court orders related to garnishment.

Immunization Requirements It is MSM’s Immunization policy that all Prospective Employees are required to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment.
