Primary Purpose PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION Ability to successfully complete 2-year Gas Mechanic Trainee Program. Provides gas and electric emergency first response service on Company systems, metering and regulating equipment, customers' gas piping, and domestic and small commercial gas appliances on customers' premises. Installs, changes, maintains, and repairs gas meters and regulators including but not limited to placing Industrial and Commercial customers on bypass. Provide investigational support to local authorities with regards to carbon monoxide incidents. Investigates reported gas leaks and takes action necessary to protect life, then property and eliminate the hazard. Responsible for first response to all reported gas emergencies, including, but not limited to: struck gas lines, fires, outages, explosions, and asphyxiation cases: Investigates causal factors and reports action taken. Demonstrates working knowledge of gas distribution facilities and appliances, gas meters, pressure regulators, gas fuel line systems, and underground Company gas piping systems. Inspects Company facilities in accordance with National, Federal, State and local regulations, laws, codes and rules. Activates and terminate gas and electric service. Gas service work includes: meter work (activations, terminations, removal, and change out), piping work (including bends and installations) performed in compliance with Gas Engineering & Construction Standard Work Practices. Electric service work includes: meter work, activations, terminations, and removals. Uses Computer Aided Dispatch System with Mobile Data Terminal (mounted in service van) to receive work orders. Prepares material orders, time sheets, warning tags and field reports of findings and actions taken. Responsible for direct contact with the customer requiring emergency service work. Responsible for resolving customer concerns and inquiries. Knowledgeable of National, State and Local Codes to all work performed. Keeps truck stocked and reorders material and equipment. Uses hand tools, power tools, and test instruments, such as the combustible gas indicator. May perform other job duties as assigned. Required to respond to emergency call-in and unscheduled overtime. Training includes all phases of gas and electric utility work. May perform other job-related duties as assigned. Required to respond to emergency call-in and unscheduled overtime. Note: Subject to rotational shiftwork including holidays and weekends. Drives in all adverse weather conditions responding to emergencies. Work can be physically demanding. Individuals will work under adverse conditions, required at times to enter vacant / abandoned properties. Physical stamina necessary to work extended shift hours, perform heavy lifting and pulling. Preferred Qualifications PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Skills/Abilities: Ability to operate computers Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and to handle paperwork. Capable of performing work requiring physical effort. Valid Class C driver's license and ability to meet Company driving standards. Must notify the company of changes impacting ability to drive. This position is considered a safety sensitive function and may be subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing. Must complete all required Operator Qualification training and maintain recertifications as required. Demonstrated ability to write, speak, read, comprehend, and communicate clearly and accurately in the English language. Must be willing and able to work overtime on a regular basis and must be available for callout overtime if, and when required, consistent with the Labor Agreement.
