General Summary
Under frequent and close supervision, the Gastrointestinal Technician performs technical and patient care functions during Endoscopy procedures under the supervision of a registered nurse. Primarily, the Gastrointestinal Technician provides assistance to the physician during Endoscopy procedures utilizing a thorough understanding of safe care and handling of equipment. Patients served include infant through adult-geriatric.

Reports to nurse manager of Endoscopy/Pre-Surgical Testing and designated charge nurse.

QualificationsHigh School diploma or equivalent required.Completion of GIT orientation or equivalent GIT experience or at least one (1) year of nursing assistant experience at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.Certified by the MBON as a CNA required, if applicable.Working Conditions
Works inside. Exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple crisis situations. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, requiring the observance of Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices. Must be able to work under physical and mental stress for duration of shift. Requires strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to adapt to frequent changes in activity level 0-3 hours/shift. Works a regular assigned shift but may be expected to work on rotating shifts including weekends and holidays as necessary. May be expected to rotate within the Perioperative Division if the need arises. This position has been classified as medium exposure risk and requires the completion of an annual respirator mask fitting.
Physical Requirements
Requires standing, bending, and walking 5-8 hours/shift. Lifting (up to and in excess of one hundred [100] pounds) and handling of instruments, equipment and supplies 5-8 hours/shift. Talking and hearing to converse with patients, staff, visitors, physicians 0-3 hours/shift. Hearing/listening to differentiate sounds 0-3 hours/shift. Visual acuity 5-8 hours/shift.
