Gear Shaper/Hobber Operator A

Description:Function

 Set up and operate no more than two gear shaper and/or hobber machines to generate various gear tooth forms such as, splines, spur and helicals on a variety of gears, rotor hubs, spindles, spline shafts, lock washers and similar parts.

Typical Responsibilities

 Work from operations sheets, parts drawings, blueprints and general instructions to set up machines to perform such operations as rough and finish generating of spurs, helical, I.D. and O.D. spline teeth and nay other work suitable to machine.
 Plane, groove, or slot metal parts such as castings, forgings, and steel stock in rough finish form.
 Layout work and coordinate machine set up to establish correct position of teeth per blueprint.
 Work includes angles, radii, facing, involute profile, lead error, cutting keyways, slots, dove tailing and in some cases the removing of teeth.
 Secure and install suitable holding fixtures, centers, cutters, etc.
 Determine change gear ratios using handbook formulas and install gears to obtain correct relationship between cutter teeth and workpiece.
 Determine correct feeds and speeds according to material and depth of cut using charts or handbook formulas.
 Indicate holding fixture and cutter and designated diameter of part to maintain concentricity.
 Monitor machine operations, measure part and check finish visually.
 Check finished dimensions to close tolerances using micrometers with pins, adjustable gauges or such fixed gages as spline root and pitch diameter snap gauges.
 Have first part checked by working leader or supervision.
 Instruct lower grade operator and perform other related gear duties as directed.
 Refer unusual problems to Working leader or Supervisor
 Perform other related work of a comparable or lower skill level as related to gear machining and check work of other operators as required.
 Perform operator checklist as required.
 Contribute to the overall effectiveness of equipment by performing operator required upkeep.
 Follow all rules and regulations pertaining to environmental health and safety.
 Segregate waste material and follow good housekeeping practices.
 Refer only unusual conditions to supervisor.

May be assigned to carry out tasks, not specifically listed, within the scope and skill level of this job description in support of department objectives and to develop individuals’ skills.
Basic Qualifications:
Requires knowledge of gear tooth characteristics, cutting tools and cutting qualities of metals.

Able to make calculations involving shop mathematics including algebra and trigonometry and handbook formulas.

Work from operation sheets, blueprints, gear summaries, etc. Use precision instruments such as height gauges, inside and outside micrometers, dial indicators and snap gauges.

Ability to Work Remotely: Onsite Full-time: The work associated with this position will be performed onsite at a designated Lockheed Martin facility.
Work Schedules: Lockheed Martin supports a variety of alternate work schedules that provide additional flexibility to our employees. Schedules range from standard 40 hours over a five day work week while others may be condensed. These condensed schedules provide employees with additional time away from the office and are in addition to our Paid Time off benefits.
