Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Utilizing evidence-based practice, the General Duty Staff Nurse is responsible for providing holistic nursing care to oncology patients during their cancer care experience including but not limited to: assessment, intervention, symptom management, treatment coordination and administration, teaching, counselling, support and follow up consistent with established policies and standards of care.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Provides direct patient care to Oncology patients by performing duties such as patient assessment, reviewing patient and family history and developing and implementing a nursing care plan specific to the patient needs considering psychosocial, cultural, ethnic contexts. Delivers treatment as per prescribed protocols.
2. Collaborates with patients, family and multidisciplinary team members to develop treatment/care plan for the patient and through ongoing assessment, assists in the modification of the treatment/care plan as the patient progresses through the stages of care.
3. Administers medications, injections, blood products and IV fluids as required by the care plan. Monitors patient reactions to treatment and changes in physical or mental status and uses independent judgment as to when to consult a physician.
4. Maintains patient records by collecting and documenting patient information and health care history, nursing assessment, telephone communications, symptom and side effect management, patient and family education and care evaluations.
5. Admits, transfers or discharges patients according to BC Cancer Agency policies and Centre directives.
6. Assists the patient in interpretation of their care plan. Refers patients to other health care professionals and programs in the agency and in the community health services as required.
7. Maintains a safe environment for patients, families, and staff by adhering to emergency procedures and safety policies and standards.
8. Maintains and updates own clinical knowledge and skills within area of practice and develops a plan in collaboration with designated personnel/team for professional development. Reviews progress to ensure goals are achieved within established time frames.
9. Participates in educational activities and programs for patients, staff (e.g. orientation) and nursing students.
10. As required, provides work direction to non-professional staff by delegating tasks during shift, monitoring work to ensure it is done correctly and completely and acts as a general resource in the provision of patient care.
11. Performs charge nurse duties when assigned.
12. Participates in unit/team/program activities required to enhance and optimize the delivery of oncology care and facilitate evidence-based nursing practice. Promotes quality management principles for unit/team/program operations, provides feedback on processes/procedures that require improvement and drafts/revises guidelines, policies and procedures for review as required. Identifies and reports unsafe practice/professional conduct in accordance with professional standards of nursing regulatory organizations and associations such as CRNBC and CANO and organizational policies.
13. Supports and participates in nursing and other related research. Applies an evidence-based approach to clinical problem-solving through methods such as reviewing literature/resources and applying approved research findings in clinical practice to support the research culture of the organization. Evaluates results in collaboration with interdisciplinary team.
14. Participates as a member of the health care team by contributing nursing practice and processes at team and centre meetings and committees as required or assigned.
15. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
• One (1) year of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

• Demonstrated ability to utilize clinical and information technology to enhance patient care in accordance with agency policies.
• Demonstrated communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with patients, the public and all levels of staff both verbally and in writing.
• Demonstrated ability to organize patient care and set priorities.
• Physical ability to perform duties of the position.
• Demonstrated skills in CPR techniques.
