General Equipment Mechanic Supervisor
Summary About the Position: Serving as a working supervisor, exercising technical and administrative supervision over a group of section employees. As a General Equipment Mechanic Supervisor, you will also perform journeyman level maintenance on mechanically operated (electric, hydraulic, pneumatic, or combinations thereof) lock structures on the Red, Ouchita/Black River systems and tributaries of these rivers. Responsibilities Plan weekly and monthly work schedules for subordinates. Develop performance standards for employees based on performance. Conduct on-the-job training for employees. Coordinate work with other crews/supervisors that may be involved in the work site project. Explain work requirements, methods, and procedures to subordinates. Participate in planning current and future work schedules, budget requests, staffing needs, etc. Conduct the full range of diagnostic maintenance inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs, parts replacement, and/or major overhaul on all lock operating systems, machinery, structural components, and related equipment. Determine extent of repairs and rebuilding required for lock operating systems, machinery, structural components and related equipment. Establish deadlines and priorities on the basis of general work schedules. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) General Equipment Mechanic Supervisor without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common diagnostic maintenance inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, parts replacement and/or major overhaul on all lock operating systems, regularly operates a large mobile crane in a work area restricted in maneuverability, making a wide range of welds varying from simple to prevision welding using flat, vertical and overhead positions. I am skilled in installing new equipment such as gears, bearings, seals, miter contact blocks, air compressors, and protective devices, etc. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. ABILITY TO INTERPRET INSTRUCTIONS, SPECIFICATIONS ETC. (INCLUDING BLUEPRINT READING) Ability To Lead or Supervise Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work normally requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. For the purpose of accommodating an employee's physical limitations, the dexterity requirements are being reduced from frequently to occasionally and the lifting requirements reduced to occasional lifting not to exceed 15 pounds from floor to knee level, 20 pounds above the shoulders, and 30 pounds from knee to chest level. Carries objects weighing up to 30 pounds for short distance on an occasional basis. All major duties of the position performed in locations where extensive standing, stooping, stretching, climbing and lifting are not necessary to effectively accomplish the tasks. Uses normal coordination of eyes, hands, legs and body in installing, repairing, operating, or testing equipment in locations easily accessible such as lockwalls, machinery recesses, lock chambers maintenance shops and yards. Occasionally climbs short ladders (i.e., to gain access to crane cab and machinery recess, etc.). Occasionally works from scaffolding and suspended stages. Directs lower graded employees to assist and to accomplish heavy lifting and carrying. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside during the day or night, subject to inclement weather, on high structures usually over water which is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high voltage electrical equipment on scaffolds and from slings. Occasionally will work behind bulkheads below the water level. Incumbent is also subject to falls, drowning, injury or discomfort and when inside, exposure to drafts, changing temperatures, and loud noises. Uses safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing. Working conditions have been considered in the evaluation of the job and environmental differential pay is not warranted for duties performed. Is normally assigned to the day shift, but is subject to call during other shifts in case of extreme emergency or other conditions requiring round-the-clock repair activities to restore lock to operational status. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation. Direct deposit of pay is required.
