Work where you matter.** **A Brief Overview** Provides expertise in clinical genetics, counsels and communicates with patients on matters of clinical genetics and provides genetic counseling services in accordance with professional ethics and values. **What you will do** + Explains the nature of genetics evaluation to clients. Obtains and reviews medical and family histories, based on the referral indication, and document the family history using standard pedigree nomenclature. Identifies any additional client and family medical information relevant to risk assessment and consideration of differential diagnoses, and assists in obtaining such information. + Researches and summarizes pertinent information data from the published literature, databases, and other professional resources as necessary for each client. Synthesizes client and family medical information and data obtained from additional research as the basis for risk assessment, differential diagnosis, genetic testing options, follow-up recommendations and case management. + Ascertains the needs and agenda for patients by providing supportive counseling regarding genetic, psychosocial, and ethnic/cultural issues of the patient and family and by identifying needs related to emotional stress and relationship issues to make appropriate referral recommendation. Assesses the risk of occurrence or recurrence of particular condition using a variety of techniques, including knowledge of inheritance patters, epidemiologic data, quantitative genetics principles, statistical models, and evaluation of clinical information, as applicable. + Explains to clients, verbally and/or in writing, medical information regarding the diagnosis or potential occurrence of a genetic condition, including: etiology, natural history, inheritance, disease management, and potential treatment options. Discusses available options and delineate for risks, benefits, and limitations of appropriate tests and clinical assessments. + Orders tests and performs clinical assessments in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. Documents case information clearly and concisely in the medical record, and in correspondence to referring providers, and discusses case information with other members of the healthcare team as necessary. Recognizes and responds to ethical and moral dilemmas arising in practice, identify factors that promote or hinder client autonomy, and understands issues surrounding privacy, informed consent, confidentiality, real or potential conflicts of interest. + Advocates for clients, which includes understanding clients’ needs and perceptions, representing their interests in accessing services and eliciting responses from the medical and social service systems as well as the community at large. Recognizes personal limitations in knowledge and/or capabilities and seek consultation or appropriately refer clients to other providers. + Maintains professional growth, which includes, acquiring relevant information required for a given situation, keeping abreast of current standards of practice as well as societal developments, and seeking out establishing mechanisms for peer support. + Respects a client’s right to confidentiality, being mindful of local, state, and federal regulations governing release of personal health information. Facilitates communication of genetic test results and coordinates appropriate follow-up for testing performed in conjunction with a formal genetic consultation. + Initiates, designs, and conducts formal and information education programs for physicians, other health professionals, and lay people that support the development of genetic programs. May conduct research in the field of medical genetics and genetic counseling as available. **Essential Qualifications** The individual must be able to work the hours specified.
