Summary:
The Genetic Counselor assesses the possibility of an inherited familial disease occurring or recurring in a family utilizing medical history and data gathered from a patient's family health history. They incorporate their education regarding genetic transfer, laboratory testing and research data to help the patient in coping and adapting appropriately to the disease process. They help patients understand and come to terms with the significant impact of a genetically inherited disease, how it will affect them and their families. Required Education Master's in Genetic Counseling. Required Certification includes Genetic Counseling certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling or Board Certification Eligible within 6 months, in addition to having a Genetic Counseling license in the State of Florida. Preferred experience includes 1 year of Genetic Counseling but willing to hire a new graduate and train accordingly.
