The Genetic Counselor II will provide genetic counseling following established genetic counseling practice guidelines in a variety of settings including cancer genetics clinic, prenatal clinic, pediatric clinic, cardiovascular clinic, neurology clinic, and other settings as appropriate.
**Primary Duties & Responsibilities**
+ Responsible for analyzing the intake information and determining if appropriate appointments have been scheduled.
+ Demonstrates knowledge, competency skills and intervention techniques in GC clinical services.
+ Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based upon analysis of risk, benefit and cost.
+ Ensures proper completion of counseling paperwork.
+ Interacts and communicates regular with the medical geneticist(s) and/or supervising physician(s).
+ Responsible for the communication of both normal and abnormal results and coordinating appropriate follow-up with medical geneticist and/or supervising physician.
+ Provides crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling regarding genetic conditions; makes referrals for ongoing care and support.
+ Acts as consultant to referring physicians regarding highly specialized genetic information pertinent to the management of their patients.
+ Participates in regular staff meetings; works to establish her/himself as a team member, providing coverage for colleagues as necessary.
+ Provides counseling in accordance w/applicable standards of professional care.
+ Attends continuous education courses, attends meetings, and reviews medical literature. Stays current in GC field.
+ Provides case management for complex genetic cases, including coordinating medical recommendations, testing, and ongoing counseling.
+ Contributes to quality/development of clinical services, participates in specialty sections, and coordinates specific services or specific projects.
+ Actively participates in outreach, education, and training activities.
**Qualifications**
**Qualifications**
+ Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling required
+ Minimum of two (2) years experience in genetic counseling and competent in all genetic counselor core functions required.
+ American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification required upon hire. American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMG) Certified Counselor certification issued prior to 1991 may still be considered.
+ Full or temporary California Genetic Counseling license required upon hire
