Genitourinary Teaching Associate, Part Time - School of Medicine

Located in a historic neighborhood in the nation's capital, Georgetown offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, exciting ways to take advantage of Washington, D.C., and a commitment to social justice. Our community is a tight knit group of remarkable individuals interested in intellectual inquiry and making a difference in the world.

Requirements

The School of Medicine is heir to the long and rich Catholic and Jesuit tradition of caring for the sick. From its inception, Georgetown has been committed to the pursuit of knowledge in service of the community. The Georgetown medical experience is centered in “cura personalis” – care for the psychological, spiritual, social as well as physical wellbeing of the person. It lays the groundwork for the intellectual and ethical formation of physician healers committed to the clinically competent care of and the well-being of their patients and dedicated to the health needs of the underserved in our society.

The Genitourinary Teaching Associate (GuTA) is a highly specialized lay instructor in a med-school’s clinical-skills program.  GuTAs are trained to teach medical students and other health professionals how to perform sensitive examinations of the genital and urinary systems (Breast / Pelvic or Prostate / Rectal). As a part of a comprehensive Foundations of Patient Care/Clinical Skills longitudinal course (18 months) at Georgetown University’s School of Medicine, additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Demonstrate teaching protocol, coaching medical trainees through performance of exams on the GuTA’s body.

Foster medical learners' development of essential communication skills, professionalism, and ethics when accurately carrying out sensitive genitourinary examinations.

Follow the appropriate protocol for examinations for patients, accurately following guidelines and patient’s preferences.

Students receive this instruction in their 2nd-year of medical school, after learning the physical exam maneuvers for other organ systems (cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal, etc.) in year 1. GuTAs, like our Physical Exam Teaching Associates and Standardized Patients, are a critical part of the Office of Medical Education’s (OME) core curriculum of clinical skills cura personalis. They are modeling and introducing patient care and respect to medical learners, with the additional aspect of sensitive and invasive patient examinations.

Requirements and Qualifications

Genitourinary Teaching Associates require many hours of specialized training and practice before being qualified to teach without supervision to very small groups of medical students at a time; there are no formal education requirements beyond the skill and professionalism that their training and teaching require

GuTAs may be recruited and trained from our cohort of Physical Exam Teaching Associates and/or Standardized Patients, who have familiarity with the methodologies and theories of interactive teaching

Ability to work on a project basis, typically on weekends throughout the fall
