Geotechnical Engineering Lead/ Technical Expert

Role Description:

Arcadis is seeking an Geotechnical Engineering Lead/Technical Expert to manage and promote our Canadian operations. This position will be based in the Greater Toronto Area and will occasionally require travel for site visits and client meetings. While remote work is regularly permitted, in-office or on-site meetings are encouraged, especially with staff under your leadership.

The ideal candidate will possess the skills necessary to build and expand our geotechnical engineering practice. Our goal is to develop and grow the geotechnical group under the successful candidate's leadership. This geotechnical expert will adeptly identify and capitalize on opportunities to lead and develop the team effectively.

Role Accountabilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating geotechnical/hydrogeologic soil, bedrock, and groundwater characteristics for design recommendations for shallow and deep foundation systems for large structures, retaining walls, and bridge structures. They will have analytical ability using advanced geotechnical/civil design models and familiarity with rail and/or light rail transit geotechnical design requirements, road/highway, and pavement design recommendations. They should be able to provide geotechnical support for environmental site remediation work for property redevelopment and infrastructure projects in the Greater Toronto Area and elsewhere across Canada, as well as design recommendations for temporary shoring, Waterloo Barriers, slurry walls, etc.

Project and team management responsibilities will include participating in regular business development activities of Arcadis to secure multi-disciplinary work, working with senior management and the geotechnical team to prepare a business plan for the group, regularly communicating with clients and internal stakeholders, working with our geotechnical team to prepare proposals and budgets for in-house opportunities, overseeing project management, including accountability for the geotechnical group project financial results, working with our growing geotechnical team to prepare detailed engineering reports and recommendations, reviewing reports prepared by our geotechnical team before client submission, and providing technical direction and mentoring of intermediate geotechnical staff.

Qualifications & Experience:

The successful candidate must have:

20+ years' experience in geotechnical, geological, or civil engineering fields 20+ years' experience conducting subsurface investigations, preparing foundation/shoring recommendations, earth structure design, and/or construction supervision A postgraduate degree in geotechnical engineering P.Eng. designation in Ontario and eligibility in other provinces

Other proven experience that will be an asset to this role include the ability to lead and motivate the members of the geotechnical team, experience establishing and maintaining close client relationships, relationship building with other senior in-house staff to land major projects, and strong written and communication skills. Ability and willingness to travel to visit clients and project sites across Canada, from time to time, will be required in the role.

Additional technical skills which would be of great benefit include experience in site investigation and geotechnical design requirements, overburden and soft rock tunneling, earth dam stability analyses and safety assessment (Dam Safety Reviews/Inspections), review of groundwater pump test data and dewatering recommendations, geotechnical laboratory and field-testing experience, familiarity with vibration analysis and building condition evaluations, familiarity with excess fill regulations and soil management plans, and a strong knowledge of Ontario geological conditions applicable to the siting of potential nuclear power sites.

The salary range for this position is $172,000-214,000. The base salary represents Arcadis’ hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
