Your Opportunity

The position summary states the general nature and purpose of the job. Overall accountabilities are defined in this section. 

Gilt selection is the last department to see replacement breeding stock before they reach our customers.  Responsible for selection and loading of proper number and quality of replacement gilts from contract owned facilities. 

Core Responsibilities

Able to identify and select quality animals to be utilized as breeding stock.

Must be able to use electronic devices to maintain proper records.

Must be professional when communicating with contract growers, management, as well as 1 or more load crew technicians.

Responsible for maintaining the equipment used in daily operations.

Follow all Bio-Security policies and procedures set forth by Smithfield Hog Production.

Insures proper handling of animals in compliance with Smithfield Department SOP’s.

Must understand and follow all loading procedures set forth by Smithfield Hog Production.

Collecting samples and following sample procedures.

Follow animal vaccination protocol set forth by Health Services.

Evaluate health and quality of animals and alert management of problems.

Incumbent will be responsible for understanding and complying with company Environmental, Safety and Biosecurity policies and procedures in the performance of their job duties.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university and 5+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.

Minimum of 2+ years’ experience in a position of leadership to include team development and management, required.

Valid NC driver’s license and acceptable MVR required.

Good communication skills.

Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.

Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.


Work Environment & Physical Demands

Must be able to frequently climb over, under, and around penning.Must be able to walk and stand on concrete for 9 to 12 hours per day, walk down narrow alleys and in and out of narrow penning.Must be able to lift 50 lbs on a limited basis.Must be able to occasionally work in situations in a leaned-over or squatted position.Must be supportive of the mission of raising swine for human consumption of high-quality pork products.Must be able to tolerate and be willing to learn and perform the following tasks: euthanasia, castration, vaccinations, piglet processing, ear tagging for identification, taking blood samples and other procedures normal to animal husbandry.Must be able to tolerate blood, animal dander, manure, dust, odors, and frequently noisy conditions.
