The University of Miami’s Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing (CSTARS) is currently seeking a GIS Analyst/Tasking Specialist to support satellite remote sensing operations. This position is in-person and located at our Richmond Campus.
Responsibilities will include performing geospatial modeling and spatial analysis of image data of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and electro-optical (EO) sensors and producing standard and customized products and maps using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools like ESRI's ArcGIS. Generating well-designed visualizations of patterns and trends from inhomogeneous databases and sources including customer-approved annotation schemes and formats (Spatial Data Standards). Quality controls the GIS data for accuracy and adheres to format specifications. Updating and maintaining databases and GIS software to the latest version and recommending improved computational hardware. Exploring and applying GIS tools to problem sets such as 3-D renditions, storymaps, and video representations and understanding usage of different geographic projections and coordinate formats.
The candidate must possess strong programming skills, be logical and disciplined thinking, efficient in developing algorithms, analyzing and solving programming problems. Proficiency using ESRI's ArcGIS software and toolboxes. Skills in Windows programming, C/C#/C++/Java/Python, Matlab and/or IDL, embedded systems with GIS concepts, Linux and SQL. Ability to apply advanced math concepts, understanding basic statistical techniques, writing of reports and users' manual.
The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in physical or natural science, math, geography, computer science, or related discipline with a certificate in GIS from an accredited university. A preferred certificate is ESRI Technical Certification in a specialty category relevant to image analysis.
The candidate must have a minimum of 2 years of applied experience in a geospatial analysis field that includes the use of current GIS tools, methods of research and analysis. Experience using ESRI ArcGIS software products, experience scripting in Python, and excellent communication and analytical skills.
