Brief Position Overview
Montana State University is looking for a GIS Analyst to join our team to support the Planning Design and Construction Division ( PDC ) within University Facilities Management ( UFM ). Our division manages approximately 28,943 surface acres of academic campus and Montana Agricultural Experiment Station ( MAES ) lands and over 860 structures across the state for multitude of efforts. GIS is an integral tool in Montana State University owned and leased land and space management. The GIS data supports policy and field level decisions. We strive to make GIS data and collection methods accessible, effective, and sustainable.

Position Details
General Statement
Planning, Design and Construction provides leadership and systematic guidance to preserve and advance the physical environment of MSU in support of education, research, and community outreach. The purpose of this position is to support the data management systems of MSU as well as to support the goals of the department and to the campus as related to buildings, campus grounds and infrastructure.
The GIS Analyst provides direct support to University Facilities Management ( UFM ) business workflows under supervision of the GIS Manager. This position is responsible for responding to map and document requests that impact campus property and utilities. This includes creating, maintaining, and providing up-to-date and accurate graphic and text-based information on MSU’s campus and farm assets. Collaboration with University Information Technology ( UIT ) and other PDC Program leads to design, develop, maintain, and provide expert consultation on inventory of assets and land cover estimation is required.
PDC maintains and manages several statewide datasets, both AGOL hosted and spatial database engine ( SDE ) based. We are looking for an individual with an attention to detail, strong organizational skills, willingness to learn, and aid our subject matter experts in mobile technology, SDE , and PDC GIS data infrastructure.
This position is based in Bozeman. Specific conditions will be outlined as part of the job offer and must adhere to Montana State University policy.
Duties and Responsibilities
+ Respond to map requests from the campus community.
+ Assist with quality assurance reviews of field inventory data to ensure accuracy and validity and determine contractor tolerance with error and specifications, i.e., review field data/as-builts and validate.
+ Leads, coordinates, collaborates, and manages GIS projects for PDC as well as participate on a variety of planning committees, work groups and project teams.
+ Design, develop, configure, and maintain web-based and mobile applications using ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Server environments.
+ Design, develop, maintain, and provide expert consultation on computerized systems to conduct infrastructure, inventory collecting, and mapping.
+ Geospatial data building and modeling, including the use of scripting languages to automate repetitive tasks.
+ Develop and maintain Unmanned Aerial Vehicle ( UAV ) applications within PDC , Coordinate with University Police, contractors, project managers and field staff to schedule and implement UAV flights to acquire high resolution imagery at the project level.
+ Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
+ Bachelor’s degree in Geography/ GIS , Computer Science, Urban Planning, Environmental Engineering, or equivalent in education and experience.
+ Demonstrated working knowledge of multiple professional disciplines of the construction and design industry, including architecture, utilities, mapping, planning, and engineering.
+ Geospatial technical skills.
+ Understanding of coordinate systems, projections, and spatial analysis techniques.
+ Familiarity with cartographic principles and the creation of maps for various applications.
+ Knowledge of geospatial metadata standards and data quality assessment.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
+ Professional knowledge and experience with a wide breadth of campus or municipality spatial data.
+ Experience with terrestrial or aerial LiDAR scanning.
+ Experience with ESRI based web development.
+ Experience with utilization and administration of ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcSDE for SQL Server.
+ Experience with data modeling principles and at least 2 scripting languages.
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills including ability to communicate program requirements to diverse levels of management and customers.
+ Strong aptitude for learning new skills, adapting to new technologies, and implementing new methodologies.
+ Drone pilots license, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
Must possess a valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and meet all State of Montana requirements to operate State/University vehicles. (If successful candidate possesses a valid out-of-state driver’s license, must obtain a valid Montana driver’s license within 60 days of hire.)

Physical Demands
+ This position requires an individual to be able to work in a variety of environments, including temperature extremes and inclement weather, noise, dust and dirt.
+ Must be able to operate vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner in all types of weather conditions and drive to job sites while entering and exiting a vehicle multiple times a day.
+ Must be able to traverse up to three miles over uneven terrain while carrying gear.
+ Must be able to transport up to 50 pounds and be in a stationary position for extended periods.
+ Possible field verification of existing physical conditions that requires moving, ascending/descending, and/or positioning self to access a wide diversity of sites and space with potential exposure to a variety of chemical, biological, and physical hazards.
