Job Summary The College of Arts and Sciences is seeking an Assistant State Archaeologist to serve as Assistant Director of the Office of State Archaeology (OSA). This position involves overseeing daily operations, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal cultural resource laws, issuing archaeological excavation and collection permits, and managing the statewide archaeological database and GIS of Kentucky archaeological sites and survey areas. The role also includes supervising professional and student staff, overseeing digitization efforts for site records and reports, and assisting the University with compliance under the Kentucky Antiquities Act and National Historic Preservation Act. Additionally, the Assistant State Archaeologist will conduct research, seek external funding to enhance site records, and contribute to archaeological education by supervising graduate assistants, interns, and researchers, with opportunities to teach courses or field schools. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in archaeological principles, GIS and database management, knowledge of NAGPRA and preservation laws, and strong leadership and communication skills.
