The position will be responsible for the cartographic design, data manipulation, data analysis, data management, and data creation from digitization or field surveys. Additional tasking may involve testing, integration, implementation, and technical support of GIS platforms. The chosen candidate will also provide recommendations toward the development of new data structures and applications. The GIS Technician will often review datasets for quality assurance. Attention will be primarily focused on supporting utility industry enterprise GIS services.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for the consistency of data in enterprise geodatabases and GIS data conversionCoordinate updates of features and attributes in enterprise geodatabasesUse editing techniques to develop, manipulate, and edit vector and raster data setsRevise maps and map products using GIS cartographic concepts, principles, and processesCreate and modify geographic data from a variety of sources, such as Internet repositories, paper documents and hand drawn maps, Microsoft Excel files, text files, database tables, Google Earth files, CAD files, etc.Rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job under immediate supervisionRegular interaction with client GIS staff

Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, Computer Science, Geography, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, or another related field desired Associate Degree with equivalent experience will be consideredExposure to Esri applications, including ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, Portal for ArcGIS (or ArcGIS Online), Collector for ArcGIS, and Survey 123 for ArcGISExposure to Esri application programing interfaces (API), including ArcPy and Arcade

Requisite Abilities and Skills

Working knowledge of GIS concepts, including editing environments, mapping projections, data conversion, map production, cartographic design principals, and digitizingAbility to translate or convert data between GIS file types, such as importing KML files into geodatabases or exporting ArcGIS layers to other formatsAbility to perform research in order to find and download GIS data from outside sourcesUnderstanding and ability to prepare metadataBasic knowledge of Windows operating systemBasic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, PowerPoint, and ExcelDemonstrated ability to work with others in supplying information and seek assistance as necessaryStrong written and verbal communication skillsDemonstrated problem solving skills and initiative
