The GIS Specialist I will assist the GIS Specialist II and UMIAQ Environmental projects by developing accurate and visually pleasing project maps and figures for use in plans, reports, and permit applications. The GIS Specialist I will be responsible for managing spatial data and performing analysis, such as calculating project footprints, to support cartographic production. Essential to this role are strong communication skills and an understanding of geospatial concepts and GIS software needed to accomplish assigned tasks. This is a full-time position located in Anchorage, Alaska.

Responsibilities

Specific duties and responsibilities are as follows:

Prepare visually pleasing project drawings for use in plans, reports, and permit applications.Follow existing procedures for document review, organization, and file structure.Inventory data needed to complete requested drawings, work to obtain data, and communicate when data needs to be purchased or is not available. Intermediate to advance skills in the MS Office suite – Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint. Communicate clearly and respectfully to all coworkers, clients, and stakeholders.  

Develop of flow charts, flyers, and outreach materials, or assist with management of data, as assigned.

 

Demonstrable ability to use GIS software to prepare and modify drawings, including accurate measurement of dimensions. Strong communication skills.Familiarity with using the internet to search for and download data needed for drawings.Ability to inventory data needed to complete requested drawings and communicate when data needs to be purchased or is not available. Intermediate to advance skills in Adobe and the MS Office suite – Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint. Planning, organizing, and prioritizing workload are primary duties. The Drafter must be flexible and capable of adapting to changing timelines.

Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.

Qualifications

Required Experience:

An Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, or technical drafting.Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS productsMS Office Suite: Word and Excel Adobe

Preferred Experience:

Familiarity with ArcGIS Online and web-based GIS productsAbility to write SQL statements to query dataFamiliarity with Python for automating tasksFamiliarity with field-based data collection processes and technology

Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) familiarity
