Global Travel Safety Manager

Position Summary:

Rice Global develops international strategy and global initiatives, and convenes stakeholders across the campus to drive Rice University’s mission abroad. 

This position serves as the lead point of contact for international risk, safety, and security preparedness protocols and services associated with international travel across the university for students, faculty, and staff, as well as for international visitors to Rice. Based in Rice Global, and reporting to the Director of Operations, this position works collaboratively with Research Security, Compliance, Risk Management, Crisis Management, Research Integrity (Export Controls), Study Abroad and other key university offices. Coordinates policies, procedures related to international travel. Promotes industry best practices for health, safety, and security and serves on campus committees as well as having national and international representation.

Workplace Requirements:

Hybrid position: This position is offered as a Houston-based hybrid role, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. This position would generally be in the office three days per week, with the exact schedule to be determined between employee and supervisor. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Travel: Some domestic and international travel may be required. 

Hiring Range: $70,000 - $78,000 annually

*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements: 

Bachelor's Degree  In lieu of the education/experience requirement, additional related education and/or experience, above and beyond what is required, may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis.  3+ years of experience in risk management or compliance.

Skills: 

Ability to develop and initiate new strategies Adept at problem-solving, creating contingency plans and handling issues when necessary Strong verbal and written communication skills Ability to work well under pressure and manage projects simultaneously Ability to manage complex projects with multiple stakeholders Strong data analysis skills  Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet expected deadlines and schedules  Strong report preparation and presentation skills. Strong client service orientation and attention to detail  Familiarity with issues related to international travel, research, and education abroad

Preferences:

5+ years of experience in higher education or risk management Strong project management skills and experience Strong web content management skills  Demonstrated experience building and fostering strong relationships at various organizational levels, with colleagues, clients, and the public. Experience living, working, or participating on an international program experience abroad.

Essential Functions:

Develops, implements, administers, and evaluates programs by: conducting research activities within the program, analyzing data, creating reports, reviewing trends, and making program improvement recommendations Reviews, updates, and maintains information on travel policy protocols, processes, data, records and communications Develop and implements outreach strategies to increase campus compliance with international travel policy  Assists in the development and facilitation of training on the International Travel Policy and related resources Creates short-term and long-term plans to achieve the mission and objectives for the program Performs all other duties as assigned

Additional Functions

Ensures that international visitors and delegations to Rice comply with university guidelines Provide assessments and recommendations for student international travel programs Develops and maintains websites/pages related to travel resources Attends International Operations Committee meetings, Compliance and Risk Officer Working Group meetings, and other travel-related working groups and standing meetings as needed Maintains awareness of changing governmental policies as they impact travel -and- education abroad, e.g. DOS travel advisories  Organizes, manages, completes special projects
