Global Virtualization & Cloud Engineer Team Lead
Overview The Global Virtualization & Cloud Engineer Team Lead, under the general direction of the Manager, is the top tier Virtualization & Cloud Engineer position critical to the team's success including the planning, design, implementation, and support of the global Virtualization, Windows Server and/or desktop platforms. This team member is responsible primarily for the architecture, assessment, optimization, and automation of the virtualization platforms. This person needs to be experienced in virtualization & datacenter technology with excellent planning and coordination skills. An energetic, solution minded personality with drive, attention to details and excellent communication skills will be needed for success in this position. Additionally, the engineers will focus on sustainability and improvement of processes, including any or all of the following duties: documenting managed environments, basic project management tasks, evening and weekend deployments, maintenance of ticketing queues and after hours on call. Responsibilities JOB DUTIES Serves as high level escalation and representation for complex issues, major incidents, and high-profile projects Provide daily supervision, mentoring and leadership of the team of engineers to ensure we provide world class support of our global customers Serve as an infrastructure engineer for the multi-disciplinary project teams they are assigned Build, install, configure and maintain various On-premises, Cloud & Hybrid virtualization products to include but not limited to VMware, Nutanix, Azure Stack HCI & OpenShift Provide advanced troubleshooting, problem resolution, and technical direction to junior engineers in support of the entire Virtualization Infrastructure Deep-dive, in-depth research to determine the root cause of problems/outages; escalate to engineering and vendor support as necessary Develop, automate and implement operational best practices Perform Capacity Management functions Effectively collaborate with Server / Storage / Network / Data Center / Facilities / Audit / Compliance and PMO teams Manage problem and service tickets ensuring timely resolution to meet expected service levels Participate in Business Continuation / Disaster Recovery infrastructure planning, building, and testing Must have the ability to understand and relate to new products, technology, strategy and be able to follow directions Ability to conduct training sessions to share knowledge with peers and other support teams is necessary Develop, implement, and maintain automated processes using various automation technologies including VMware Aria Automation Effectively communicates current status of all projects, problems, and issues to the department management team Proactively identifies opportunities for improvements to existing processes and for automation of time consuming tasks Ensure that all virtualization platforms are running at optimal capacity Study and analyze the performance and capacities of the systems and peripheral equipment/systems and prepare plans for future expansion and upgrades Collaborates with external and internal customers to analyze information needs and functional requirements and deliver the artifacts as needed Must have high attention to detail, be well organized and be a self-starter Must be able to work with limited to moderate direct supervision Contributes to the development of RFPs/SOWs and participates in the vendor selection process Uses a broad and deep understanding of technical concepts in multiple specialized fields to develop solutions to problems and critical design issues Resolves most conflicts between timeline, budget, and scope independently but intuitively Escalates complex or consequential issues to management Identifies and directs changes through appropriate review and approval mechanisms Maintain Service Now change and incident queue, closing tickets in a timely manner with appropriate documentation and change management queue Working ticketing system incident and change management queue as needed General Windows operating system and applications support Periodic platform upgrades as needed, both on the OS and application tier Install system patches and application updates as directed Respond to compliance assessments and initiate corrective action when appropriate for audit and compliance remediation Define and evangelize enterprise policies, standards and position statements for new and existing Virtualization and Automation related technologies The candidate must be willing to accommodate weekend, shift or on-call schedules when necessary, and participate in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours support Assist the management team with research in order to stay abreast of the latest developments in Virtualization, Automation and physical Wintel technologies, trends, and knowledge, and legislation Assist the management team in determining the direction and enhancement of automation processes to meet the needs of the organization Qualifications Knowledge Advanced knowledge in Infrastructure design and management Working knowledge of management processes such as personnel administration, planning and budgeting Advanced understanding of IT Service Management (ITSM) best practices and processes Advanced knowledge of TCP/IP, OSI model and IP subnetting Advanced understanding of technology infrastructure, security concepts and platforms Demonstrated success in project management Advanced knowledge of the OSI model and security that is associated with each layer Understanding of routing and switching protocols as they relate to load balancing Strong understanding of application layer protocols including HTTP, SSH, SSL, and DNS Knowledge and stay abreast on the latest security and privacy legislation, regulations, advisories, alerts and vulnerabilities Knowledge of IT security processes and controls as well as IT infrastructure and networking technical knowledge Expert-level knowledge of enterprise platforms and operating systems as well as knowledge of key business functions and processes Expert-level knowledge of Windows Server OS support, including local user/group management, security policy, task scheduler, event logs, performance monitoring, group policy, PowerShell, file/share permissions Expert-level technical knowledge of VMware virtualization technologies (vCenter, vSphere, ESXi, DRS, vMotion, HA, FT, DRS, SRM, vSphere Replication, Aria Automation, Aria Operations, Aria Operations for Logs, Aria Operations for Networks, VMware HCX, vSAN, NSX, VMware Life Cycle Manager) Expert-level technical knowledge of VDI technologies, VMware Horizon View, Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop Expert-level experience with static desktop and dynamic desktop supporting technologies such as Cloning, Thin Provisioning, Application Virtualization and Streaming (App-V) Strong understanding of VMware Cloud technologies including Azure VMware Solution (AVS) and AWS Knowledge of VMware Tanzu Knowledge of Kubernetes concepts Knowledge of Cisco ACI SDN networking concepts Advanced experience with Storage Area Network’s including boot from SAN Technologies Expert-level technical knowledge of HP hardware to include C7000 enclosures, ML/DL & BL server and blade technologies, Virtual Connect, and HP OneView Expert-level technical knowledge of current generation Dell hardware including Dell VxRail and Open Manage management platform Expert-level troubleshooting knowledge, utilizing packet sniffers, Fiddler, log parsers, and other utilities relative to problem diagnosis and remediation Expert-level knowledge of VMware virtualization concepts and automation methods Scripting and automation languages a plus, particularly PowerShell and Terraform Experience working in 1000+ server environment preferred Skills Ability to effectively lead, mentor, organize, and supervise Ability to work directly with senior level management Ability to think
