Nature of Work The Golf Superintendent is under the general supervision of the Director of Golf and is responsible for the overall maintenance, care and upkeep of all City-owned golf facilities to ensure that golfers enjoy the best playing conditions and surroundings. This position also has responsibility for the overall maintenance and repair of golf-related maintenance equipment. This position performs other related duties as required or assigned. Distinguishing Characteristics: This position serves in a lead role for golf-related maintenance activities by assisting with: orientation/training, providing work direction, and planning work schedules for equipment operators and other seasonal/temporary workers. This position also provides budget recommendations to the Director of Golf related to the number of personnel, supplies, services, tools and equipment needed for the maintenance of each golf facility and is obligated to perform work duties in alignment with the approved budget. Pay Starting rate is $30.57 an hour with advancement to $39.06. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The work below is representative of the scope of work perform *Coordinate all activities related to the overall maintenance, care and upkeep of all golf course grounds and facilities. + Coordinate daily maintenance activities with the Golf Pro/Recreation Coordinator to ensure smooth golf course operations and minimum disruption to golfers. + Determine whether the grounds are in suitable playing condition and when their use should be prohibited. + Determine daily work procedures, prioritize work tasks, plan work schedules, and provide work direction to equipment operators and seasonal employees. + Perform or assist subordinates with maintenance activities, improve work methods to accomplish assigned tasks. + Inspect the golf course and related areas to evaluate compliance to management standards and recommend changes for maintenance activities. + Train personnel in proper golf course maintenance procedures and safe operation of all maintenance equipment. + Perform general building maintenance and repairs. + Assist in monitoring services, projects, construction or renovations to the golf facilities performed by contractors. + Communicate with the Parks & Recreation Director, Golf Pro/Recreation Coordinator, and all grounds crew, including cell phone and email regarding maintenance activities. *Maintain appropriate records for all maintenance activities and achieve goals with available and/or allocated resources. + Track expenditures including water usage and labor costs, etc., and exercise cost control measures to keep, as nearly as possible, operating and capital expenses in line with the approved budget. + Keep records of equipment fuel usage and fuel tank access. + Follow industry safety practices including adherence to relevant regulations pertaining to the application of chemicals; ensure that applicators obtain/maintain the appropriate licensure; keep appropriate records. + Submit requisitions for the purchase of resources, materials, products including fuel, fertilizer, herbicide, insecticide, plant protectants and soil conditioners and other related supplies and maintain an adequate supply of the same for all assign areas of responsibility. + Create purchase orders and properly code expenses for processing and payment. + Assist in developing specifications for equipment and supply purchases. + Make budget recommendations to the Parks & Recreation Director related to the number of personnel, supplies, services, tools and equipment needed for the maintenance of each golf facility for the following year. *Install, operate, and maintain automatic and manual irrigation systems. + Install new irrigation as needed to better maintain turf conditions. + Maintain water schedules for irrigation including turf syringing. + Perform preventative maintenance, repair, opening and winterizing of the irrigation system. *Maintain golf maintenance office and shop. + Ensure that shop and office are kept clean, organized, safe and neat appearing. + Maintain appropriate records and MSDS sheets for Right-to-Know compliance related to chemical usage. + Disseminate information and communicate policies and procedures to seasonal staff. *Maintain golf-quality turf. + Develop and maintain all turf treatment programs including fertilization, sprouting, and pesticide applications. + Diagnose/distinguish between turf disease, environmental problems or damage from usage; identify and resolve turf related problems. + Maintain golf playing surfaces to acceptable playing conditions. + Schedule and define the techniques for the daily maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs and all other landscape including bunker maintenance, cup relocation, tee box positioning, ball washer/towel/litter servicing, vericut, spike, aerate, vibrate and top dressing of turf; oversee and/or assist with performing the same. *Assure that all tools and equipment are properly maintained and kept in the appropriate working condition according to the manufacturers’ specifications. + Schedule and define the techniques for the preventative maintenance and upkeep on all golf maintenance equipment and tools; oversee and/or assist with performing the same. + Oversee and/or assist with performing routine maintenance, and care or repair of equipment. + Test and repair electrical and hydraulic systems and components. + Fabricate, weld and do carpentry as needed or required. + Operate reel, rotary and bed knife sharpening machines; set reel to bed knife tolerances through back lapping. + Ensure that all safety, devices, switches, guards and actuators are in place and proper working condition. * Essential Functions MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Graduation from a two-year Turf Management program or the equivalent AND two years golf course maintenance experience OR A high school diploma or the equivalent AND at least 5 years advanced training and/or progressively responsible experience which demonstrates proficiency in the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below. Acceptable education might include turf management or short courses specific to golf course maintenance. Acceptable experience is limited to golf course maintenance. Licenses and Certifications Valid Minnesota Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement; and non-commercial pesticide applicator license; within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment.
