POSITION SUMMARY: The Staff Dentist, under the direction of the Dental Director or Solo Chief Dentist, is responsible for the direct delivery of dental care.

                                                                                   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

 

Provides direct dental care for patients. Conducts dental examinations and determines treatment plan      for patients. Provides diagnostic, preventative, restorative,      endodontic, periodontic, prosthodontics, surgical, interceptive-orthodontic      and adjunct general services for patients. Refers patients to specialty and generalist care as      needed.   Coordinates Purchased Referred Care referrals for eligible      patients.  Follows Privacy Act Guidelines. Supervises dental clinic in the absence of the Dental      Director/Deputy Dental Director or Chief Solo Dentist. Attends clinic committee meetings. Participates in quality assurance program. Assists in setting goals for the dental clinic.

CONTACTS: Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other Departments, executives, Board of Directors, customers, outside vendor/service providers, Federal, State and Tribal and local governments and agencies, general public and Tribal members.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Position medium with lifting of 50 pounds maximum and frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds. Physical factors include: constant use of near vision, depth perception and field of vision; frequent standing, walking, sitting, reaching, manual handling, use of hearing, midrange/far vision, and typing, and occasional pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, use of smell, color vision, travel and bending.  Working conditions include: exposure to noise and vibration and occasional exposure to weather, extreme heat/cold and bending. Potential hazards include: exposure to blood borne pathogens and sharp equipment. Constant exposure to moving mechanical parts, chemicals, infectious exposure, patient contact, medical equipment; frequent computer use and occasional exposure to high exposed places. Personal protection equipment provided by employer includes items such as but not limited to, gloves, gowns, laboratory coats, face shields, masks, eye protection, mouth pieces, resuscitation bags, pocket masks, ventilation devices and other equipment as needed.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education: Doctor of Dental Science (DDS) or Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD) required.

 

Experience: Doctor of Dental Science (DDS) or Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD) experience preferred.

 

Certification/License:  Must have and maintain current Michigan Dental License and Drug Enforcement Agency License (DEA.). (For new graduates of dental school or candidates holding license from another US. State:   if he/she does not currently have a license he/she must procure a license within a time frame that will be specified in the contract.)  Dental license requirement may differ if candidate is Commissioned Officer in US Public Health Service and will be reviewed at the time of interview and also specified in the contract.  Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have advanced training in general dentistry including: diagnostic, preventive, restorative, endodontic, periodontic, prosthodontics, surgical, interceptive-orthodontic, and adjunctive general services.  Must have knowledge of general dentistry, personnel management and supervision principles. Must have knowledge of dental quality assurance principles. Must have knowledge of Indian Health Service (IHS) and ADA Dental Guidelines and Standards of Care. Must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate effectively and clearly, verbally and in writing, by telephone and email and in a diverse range of audiences and settings. Must be able to work under pressure and handle difficult situations. Must be able to work extended hours when needed. Must be flexible and available to work various shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.  Must have excellent organizational skills; organizing work, prioritizing tasks and managing time. Must maintain confidentiality. Native American preferred.
