Responsibilities

THIS IS A CASUAL POSITION WORKING A MAXIMUM OF 900 HOURS PER CALENDAR YEAR.

 

STEM Interns will work under the direct supervision of a manager and mentor and will be provided with hands-on participation in ongoing projects at one of the most unique experimental sites in the United States, or one of our outlying location sites. 

 

Internships are available at the following locations:

North Las Vegas, NevadaNevada National Security Site (65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada)Remote Sensing Laboratories at Nellis Air Force Base (Las Vegas, Nevada) or Andrews Airforce Base (Joint Base Andrews, Maryland)Los Alamos and Albuquerque, New Mexico

We are looking for qualified and motivated Graduate students that are pursuing a degree in:

All branches of engineering, science, technology and mathematics with inclination to work in the area of nuclear security. 

Duties and Responsibilities (may include and will vary depending on which department you are assigned to):

Take direction from assigned NNSS mentors in all aspects of his/her work.Deliver according to the performance metrics designed in partnership with the mentor.Participate in hands on data acquisition activities depending on the project.Participate in small teams of scientists, engineers, and technicians, to devise technical solutions and provide deliverables to customers. Perform hands-on work on optical, mechanical and/or electrical systems including data acquisition and system and/or subsystem fabrication. Build programming code/scripts to computationally process image and/or signal data, e.g. in Python, MATLAB, or R. Knowledge of image/signal processing techniques is desired.Perform document reviews and updates.Create Facility Change Requests to implement desired changes to various systems.Conduct walk-downs of various systems to ensure Configuration Management is properly implemented and to validate design drawings are consistent with physical configuration.Take part in development and implementation of engineering design changes.Interface with technical experts across multiple disciplines of science, engineering and mathematics.Learn to read system drawings and sketches.Draft drawing/specification/calculations for engineer use.Create and give presentations on both project and progress to teammates and management.Collaboratively produce professional reports and papers.

Completion of Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering program accredited by the Accredidation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical degrees, as of the date application is submitted. or Completion of a Calculous-based STEM bachelor's degree in engineering, as of the date application is submitted.Must be actively enrolled in in a graduate engineering program accrredited by the Accredidation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), as of the date application is submitted. or actively enrolled in a Calculus-based STEM graduate program in engineering, as of the date application is submitted. Must have and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale as of the date application is submitted.Must be located in the contiguous United States.Must Have:Planning/organizing skills and initiativeGood written and verbal communication skillsAble to follow directions, both written and verbal, and work independently to meet deadlines and commitments as well as part of a team.Solid background in calculus based mathmaticsBasiuc knowledge of science and engineering equipment, software, systems, calculations, and applications of engineering methods.Have self-motivating attitude and is open to exploring all areas of engineering. Strong computer skills are desired, including MS Office and computer programming.Pre-placement drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.Must possess a valid driver's license.

 

Ability to obtain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification credential under the Department of Energy Order 206.2, ‘Identity, Credential, and Access Management,’ and Supplemental Directive NNSA SD 206.2, ‘Implementation of Personal Identity Verification for Uncleared Contractors.’
