ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Nurse Manager is the mid-level Nursing leader and has 24 hour accountability and responsibility for direct care on assigned units The Nurse Manager provides a critical link between the administrative strategic plan and the point of care. The Nurse Manager is responsible for creating safe and healthy environments that support the work of the health care team and contribute to patient engagement. The role is influential in creating a professional environment and fostering a culture where interdisciplinary team members are able to contribute to optimal patient outcomes and grow professionally.

The Nurse Manager Competencies are based on the Nurse Manager Learning Domain Framework developed through the work of the American Organization of Nurse Executives. Theses competencies capture the skills, knowledge and abilities that guide the practice of the Nurse Managers. The successful Nurse Manager needs to develop expertise in all three areas.

JOB SUMMARY: The Nurse Manager assumes a supportive and active role in the day-today management of the Nursing Staff on their Units. The Nurse Manager works with the Nursing Supervisors to ensure the success of all Patient Care Nursing Service Clinical Operations. Among the responsibilities is the role of communications liaison for the staff and Director of Nursing, serving as a role model and resource person, monitoring the quality of care delivered, and assuming managerial duties as delegated by the Director of Nursing. The Nurse Manager assumes managerial responsibilities and Special Projects delegated by the Director of Nursing. The Nurse Manager also assumes the role and responsibility of supporting and providing ongoing education to Nursing staff working on the units to assure high quality of care to all persons receiving facility services. Additionally, the role will assume a supportive and active role with instructing staff on the complete and accurate way to document patient care, assisting other members of the Patient Care team in the execution of the treatment plans when caring for the patient, working with the ADON to see that patient care supplies are ordered and that adequate par levels are maintained. The Nurse Manager assists with new employee orientation, communicating with the ADON to assist with transportations, and assisting Nursing staff with admission and discharge processes.

The Nurse Manager assists with training throughout the facility for annual competencies as well as new hire orientations. This includes, but is not limited to New Employee orientation, Nursing department orientation, Unit Orientation, waived testing, annual training and yearly nursing competencies. The Nurse Manager serves as a Nursing Leader for Nursing Staff Treatment Planning and Treatment Plan updates, for Falls Assessment/Post-Falls Assessments, and meeting facilitator with staff meetings. The Nurse Manager assist the Director of Nursing in preparing required reports. This includes, but is not limited to survey readiness by maintaining quality and compliance with standards and regulations that relate to Nursing.

The Nurse Manager serves as a role model and resource person, and assists in monitoring the quality of care delivered. In cooperation with the ADON, ensures that Nursing Staff are scheduled and staffing is addressed. This may include: assisting with calling staff when call-outs occur, and assisting with relieving staff for meal breaks if needed.

Accountable for the standard of care at the facility, providing consultations and expertise in the delivery of care to patient.

Serve as a clinical and service resource to nursing staff and other staff as assigned.

Manage the activities of staff, coordinating safe and appropriate care between departments and disciplines.

Manage and evaluate work activities of nursing, technical, clerical, service or maintenance staff for the unit, work group and other facility staff as directed.

Analyze information/situation to choose the best solution(s) to solve problems.

Responsible for recruitment, hiring and training of new staff.

Identify the educational needs of others and develop educational or training programs.

Assist with the development and implementation of organizational policies and procedures for the facility.

Prepare reports to inform management of the status and implementation of programs, services and quality initiatives of the unit.

Perform administrative or managerial functions such as planning budgets and authorizing expenditures.

Provide direct care as needed.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

Perform other functions and tasks as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Four or more years of nursing experience and previous experience with patient population of the facility is preferred. Minimum one or more years’ management, charge or administrative experience required.

LICENSES/DESIGNATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS:

Current RN license as required by state. First Aid, CPR, de-escalation and restraint certification required (training available upon hire and offered by facility).
