PURPOSE:

Under limited supervision, perform belt grinding operations to remove gates form a variety of company product castings.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Work from shop orders, instruction to smooth and grind a variety of gates; exercise care and avoid removal of casting features and obtain required smoothness and blending.  Select and place abrasive belt; change pressure wheel.  Manually manipulate part against abrasive belt to remove surface irregularities, blend contours and surfaces, and impart required surface finish.  Check parts to close tolerance using micrometers, radius gauges, templates and fixed gauges.Setup grinder and grind angled surfaces; set and position grinding jigs to control radii and other features as necessary.  Select and change abrasive discs.  Load part in jig and secure, operate manually to smooth and maintain features, obtain surface finish.Detect and report improper operation and unusual conditions to proper supervision.  Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.  Follow prescribed safety regulations.Perform a variety of other tasks of equal or lesser complexity as assigned by supervisor.

 

SPECIAL SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Perform belt grinding operations on a wide variety of parts with some close tolerances involved.  Requires the use of some judgment to select proper abrasive belt, check work to maintain tolerances and finish, perform other duties effectively, avoid removal of important surfaces.Continuous mental and visual attention in material removal, selection of belts, checking parts, maintaining finishing and tolerances.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to the Pre-Fin supervisor.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Use ordinary arithmetic, decimals, and fractions.  Work from simple drawings and specifications.  Use micrometers scale, rule fixed gauges involving interpretation.3 and up to 6 months of experience preferred /*generated inline style */
