Group 47 - Summer Research Program Intern (Power System Modeling)

The Energy Systems Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory develops technology solutions that enhance the resilence and effciency of both civilian and defense energy systems.  This includes developing advanced architectures and system designs to improve the resilience of power girds, developing new control techniques for microgrids and distributed energy resources, and developing hardware and real-time simulation testbeds.

We seek a summer intern to join a multi-disciplinary team that researches, tests, and develops power distribution systems and energy generation systems that can provide robust and efficient power to critical services across the country.  The candidate will develop power distribution system models to understand how generation sources (both traditional diesel and natural gas-fired as well as renewables), electric vehicles, energy storage, and distribution system configurations can be best design to support reliable power delivery. This will include developing distribution system models in virtual simulation environments as well as in a hardware-in-the-loop platform.

Candidates who are in the process of earning a B.S., M.S., and or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, or other engineering discipline will be considered.

Desired Skills:

Preliminary coursework in power systems, power flow, and knowledge of power system controls Fluency with Python scripting, MATLAB, and MATLAB Simulink Exposure to modern power systems concepts and challenges (e.g., energy storage or renewable energy integration and protection) Strong problem-solving skills Detail oriented, able to multi-task, and have the ability to work autonomously for subsets of the summer Effective written and oral communications skills in technical environments Familiarity with power flow simulation tools, most notably, EasyPower

Selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.

MIT Lincoln Laboratory is an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, veteran status, disability status, or genetic information; U.S. citizenship is required.
