Location:Highway Building, 1 S Wilmington St., Raleigh, NC

The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Integrated Mobility Division is seeking a motivated intern to join the Planning and Programming team. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on innovative transportation initiatives that shape the future of multimodal and public transportation across the state.
Position Overview:The intern will collaborate with the Planning and Programming team and engage with additional branches and divisions within the NCDOT. Projects will focus on transportation programming and planning, including feasibility studies, mobility initiatives, Safe Routes to School, state and regional transit planning, safety education for transit systems, and project selection tools like the Bicycle and Pedestrian Discretionary Grants (TAP). The intern will primarily focus on meaningful, hands-on projects that advance statewide transportation planning and compliance goals.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Assist with feasibility studies and programming activities for multimodal transportation projects.
+ Contribute to state and regional transit and mobility planning efforts.
+ Support compliance and safety education initiatives for transit systems.
+ Utilize project selection tools and processes, such as discretionary grant tools, to evaluate and prioritize projects.
+ Collaborate with team members to develop materials, attend meetings, and participate in state-wide planning discussions.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ General understanding of transportation planning practices, including federal and state policies related to multimodal, bicycle, pedestrian, and public transportation systems.
+ Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with attention to detail and excellent organizational abilities.
+ Proficiency in office software and a working knowledge of GIS software programs.
+ Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and represent the Division professionally in meetings.
+ Pursuing or holding a bachelor’s or master’s degree in urban and regional planning, transportation planning, engineering, public/business administration, or economics.

+ Must be a currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors, masters, or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) within the past three years.
+ 24 credit hours completed.
+ Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)
+ Has legal right to work in the U.S. and do not need sponsorship
