Position Overview:
The Roadway Design Unit at NCDOT is seeking a motivated intern to join our team within the Design Development and Support Group. This is an excellent opportunity for students pursuing a career in civil engineering or related fields to gain hands-on experience in roadway design and project development. Interns will collaborate with a team consisting of Engineer I, II, and III staff members, as well as the unit supervisor, to work on real-world transportation projects and improve critical skills.
The Roadway Design Unit at NCDOT plays a vital role in shaping North Carolina’s transportation infrastructure by developing detailed roadway designs and plans for state projects. As an intern in this unit, you will immerse yourself in the fundamentals of roadway design, working alongside experienced engineers on real-world transportation initiatives. This position provides a unique opportunity to learn how to read and interpret NCDOT roadway plans, establish project-specific design criteria, and create detailed roadway plans for example projects. Interns will gain hands-on experience in applying engineering principles, utilizing CADD tools, and solving design challenges in a collaborative team environment. This role is ideal for students eager to enhance their technical skills, understand the intricacies of civil engineering in transportation, and contribute to impactful projects that improve the state’s infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Learn to interpret and analyze NCDOT roadway plans.
+ Develop design criteria for transportation projects.
+ Collaborate with team members and work independently to create a set of roadway plans for an example project.
+ Utilize mathematics, engineering principles, and CADD tools in a practical environment.
+ Strengthen oral and written communication skills through regular updates and a final presentation to unit leadership.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Students majoring in engineering fields, particularly civil engineering, are strongly encouraged to apply.
+ Strong skills in mathematics, design, and computer-aided design (CADD).
+ Excellent oral and written communication abilities.
Work Environment:
+ Interns will work at the NCDOT Century Center Building A alongside their supervisor and team members.
+ The focus is on hands-on learning and project-based work.
+ Support and mentorship will be provided by experienced engineers and the supervisor.
Intern Evaluation and Progress:
+ Interns will progress through training materials and project deliverables under close supervision.
+ Performance will be evaluated based on their ability to complete tasks, apply learned concepts, and overcome challenges.
+ At the end of the internship, interns will present their work and learning outcomes to unit leadership.
Additional Information:
+ This position offers a chance to work in a professional engineering environment and develop technical skills critical to a career in transportation design.
