Head Custodian S06, SCL Residential & Event Services
Student and Campus Life (SCL), encompasses everything a student might do outside of the classroom. This includes sports, recreation, health, wellness, housing, dining, Greek life, public service, career service, and much more.

   

As part of the SCL group, Residential & Event Services (RES) provides a wide array of services to students, families, faculty, staff, alumni, conference guests, and visitors to the Cornell campus.

Under direct supervisor of the Building Coordinator, the Head Custodian SO-06 leads and directs the work of up to 10 custodial staff in assigned buildings. Responsible for the maintenance of assigned areas to ensure custodial work is complete up to departmental standards and helps provide physically intensive and detailed custodial maintenance of Cornell’s Student Centers, or other assigned area(s) which are deemed essential operations.

This includes, but not limited to:

Provide day-to-day guidance, coordination, and training to team as deemed by the Building Coordinator.Assists team in routine custodial maintenance and care of the restrooms, public corridors, lobbies, offices,classrooms, multipurpose rooms, etc. to the established departmental cleaning standards in buildings assignedincluding furniture, rugs, and floor care.

Support Building Coordinator by reporting directly any damage, safety issues, etc.

Responsible for organizing, maintaining, and distributing supplies/equipment for assigned building(s) (e.g.,cleaning supplies, paper goods, furniture, and equipment.). This includes key distribution, uniform distribution,and personal protective wear.

Provide direct day-to-day coordination of room setups and audiovisual support for conferences/meetings/eventsin the Student Centers. Must provide set up, operation and troubleshooting for any audiovisual needs; thisincludes LCD projectors, wired/wireless microphones, soundboards, etc.

Provide support and front-line service to students, staff, faculty, and all building users throughout shift. Willwork directly with students, staff, faculty, etc. to help facilitate their meeting/seminar/conferenceneeds.

Effectively communicate clearly both verbally and in writing to interact with building guests and students andserve as a good steward of the university

Flexible schedule is needed to support special events and times set by the University (Opening, Closing, Reunions, etc.) and taken an active leadership role during University events; some pre-scheduled weekend/workday work; overtime hours are needed to maintain building operations during inclement weather.

This is position is part of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. The current rate of pay is listed in the collective bargaining agreement here: https://hr.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/2023-04/uaw.pdf and starts at $24.75/hour.


Location and schedule assignments will be based on business needs and include varying shifts. Position(s) may require nights/weekends/holiday coverage based on business needs.​

Required Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent with 2-3 years of demonstrated custodial and leadership experience.

Experience performing event setups (i.e. experience setting up tables, chairs, equipment, skirting, etc.)

Effective interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills including both written and verbal skills.Must demonstrate a willingness to work with students and show respect and service orientation towards thestudent community.

Must be able to effectively read and write in English.

Must have experience with a room scheduling software (i.e. R25 preferred) and basic use of Microsoft Office(i.e. Word, Excel)

Experience with audio visual set-up, operating and troubleshooting audio visual equipment; i.e. LCD projector,projector screens, computer hook-up to LCD projector, lighting, portable sound systems, wired/wireless.

Able to lift 50 lbs. consistently throughout the shift moving tables, chairs, etc.

Able to climb an 8 ft. ladder.

Able to stand for long periods of time.

Demonstrated ability to operate necessary power equipment (i.e. floor machines, vacuums, buffers, etc.) andexperience cleaning all types of carpet and floor care.

Must be able to work in all weather conditions and extreme temperatures for extended periods.

Must be free of debilitating dust allergies, or have the ability to manage such allergy.

Must have demonstrated knowledge of operating related power equipment and cleaning, maintenance of alltypes of carpet and floor care

Poses & maintain a valid NY State driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience working in a Student Center, Event Center, and/or Conference Center operation.

Knowledge and previous experience working in a Student Center, Event Center, and/or Conference Center operation, preferred.
