Position Summary:This is a 12-month full time position that resides in the Athletic Department within the Division of Student Affairs. This position reports directly to the Executive Director of Athletics.
The Head Coach is responsible for the direction, instruction, and supervision of the Football program as well as the oversight and development of assistant coaches and other personnel such as team managers, student workers, and volunteers.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, operations of the assigned sport, compliance with all NCAA and NJAC rules & regulations, adherence to the standards & values of TCNJ and the Athletic Department, recruitment & development of qualified student-athletes, academic support & integrity, competition scheduling & preparation, practice planning & implementation, budget management, fundraising, and alumni relations.
Main Responsibilities:
Sport Instruction & Coaching Philosophy – Practice planning, skill development & sport instruction. Contest scheduling, scouting of opponents and competition preparation. Maintain student centered philosophy aligned with the NCAA DIII Philosophy. Maintain current on sport coaching strategies and techniques; adjust coaching style as needed to provide a safe and challenging environment for student-athletes and the team that motivates, encourages, and promotes growth. Student-Athlete Experience – Consistently provide a positive student-athlete experience. Mentor, develop and provide leadership, for student-athletes academic, athletics, and social performance. Monitor student-athlete academic performance. Promote the general physical and mental health & well-being of student-athletes. Utilize campus resources to provide academic, health & wellness support/guidance as needed. Plan and execute team community service and service learning projects. Identify and participate in community engagement opportunities on and off campus. Compliance – Demonstrate knowledge and strict compliance with all NCAA, NJAC & TCNJ rules and regulations. Maintain active and updated roster database. Complete and keep up to date on required trainings and certifications. Supervision & Development – Supervise, manage, and develop assistant coaches to be active and supportive member of the coaching staff. Supervise and manage student-athletes, volunteers, managers, and student workers. Manage and supervise student & staff team travel. Develop and execute strategic recruiting plan. Attend a variety of high school, club, and organized sport games & tournaments to recruit qualified and diverse student-athletes. Host camps, clinics, & prospect days to increase community& recruiting engagement. Work to recruit within the guidelines of admissions standards, timelines, and expectations. Host prospective student-athletes on official campus visits and actively pursue and sell recruits on choosing TCNJ. Collaboration & Communication – Adhere to the values and guidelines of TCNJ and the Athletic Department including but not limited to the Athletic Department Policies and Procedures Manual, The Lion Way, and Head Coach Top 10 Responsibilities. Attend meetings, events, conferences, and trainings as required. Attend functions as a representative of your team and the department. Maintain positive relationships with various departments across campus including but not limited to the Dean of Students Office, Alumni Affairs, Development, Health and Wellness, Recreation, and Campus Police. Budget Management & Fundraising – Assist with budget formulation and managing team budget. Develop and execute strategic fundraising plan to cover costs of items not allotted with the department budget. Work closely with Executive Director of Athletics to identify potential donors and cultivate relationships. Alumni Engagement – Maintain active and updated alumni database. Maintain and develop alumni relationships, keep alumni engaged with the team, athletic department, & TCNJ. Promote and encourage alumni involvement at various team/department functions. Contribute to department alumni functions, initiatives, emails and newsletters. Other duties, as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college/university with a Bachelors degree supplemented by a Masters degree in a field related to the position or equivalency as determined by the appointing authority. Minimum of 3 years college coaching experience. Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations. Demonstrated experience successfully recruiting high achieving student-athletes. Demonstrated commitment to the academic success, personal growth, and athletic development of student-athletes. Experience with alumni relations and fundraising strongly desired. Strong knowledge and understanding of the sport of Football and team and individual skill development. Ability to teach, inspire, direct, and lead student-athletes. Ability to serve as a positive role model and mentor. Must have strong knowledge of & ensure compliance with all NCAA, NJAC and TCNJ regulations and philosophies. Certified in first aid, CPR & AED. Strong organizational skills along with the ability to effectively communicate, supervise, implement, and lead. Ability to lead, supervise, train, and direct assistant coaches, volunteers, team managers, and student workers.
