Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a highly motivated Head of Safety to lead a team of dedicated health and safety professionals, in addition to planning, developing, implementing, and coordinating company-wide safety programs and policies in accordance with pertinent regulations and policies with a primary focus on aviation and manufacturing. Oversight and maintenance of an enterprise-wide Safety Management System will be a core responsibility, along with oversight of safety programs in manufacturing, air operations, flight test, and research and development.

Responsibilities Act as Joby’s chief safety champion – model and promote an organizational culture that fosters safety practices through effective leadership Manage an enterprise-wide safety management system (SMS), including management of the FAA Part 135, Part 145, Part 141, and OEM SMS programs under the FAA Part 5 SMS program. Particulate regularly in technical safety reviews, flight readiness reviews and safety review boards, providing technical safety perspective and insights. Lead the development and standardization of procedures, risk assessments, proactive safety reporting, and emergency response,  involving air operations, flight test, research and development, manufacturing, and other areas across the company, Present Joby's safety posture and current status to the Executive Leadership and Board of Directors on a regular basis. Interface with company leadership, employees, contractors, FAA, OSHA, and other regulators to ensure a safe, compliant, and successful experience for everyone at JobyBuild strong working relationships across the Joby organization to reinforce a strong safety and compliance culture Oversee cross-functional and volunteer teams, including safety team, first responders, incident review board, and others as requiredDevelop and oversee occupational health programsRecommend, develop and implement appropriate safety training opportunities for personnelLead a team that provides written and oral safety communication to the company, including safety surveys, newsletters, and overall safety promotion. Ensure compliance with safety and security standards and internal processes and proceduresOther duties and responsibilities as assigned Required 10+ years of safety experience, 5+ years of experience in a leadership roleBachelor’s degree with a concentration in systems engineering, system safety, aeronautical engineering, aviation management, aviation safety, aeronautical technology, or a related field Master’s degree is a plusExtensive knowledge of aviation safety standards, safe operating practices, emergency response procedures, and FAA regulationsOperational leadership with the ability to perform in a demanding environment with rapidly changing prioritiesAbility to identify safety hazards and promote the reduction and elimination of hazardous and potentially hazardous conditionsExcellent presentation, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills are an absolute mustStrong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with minimal to no oversightAbility to be flexible, work under pressure, multitask, and make critical decisions in a fast-paced environmentWillingness to be available 24/7 as needed Desired Prior experience working in safety at an aircraft manufacturerExperience with managing Safety Management Systems (SMS)System safety, aircraft certification, flight test or other aviation engineering practical experience. Pilot’s license and/or A&PBasic knowledge of OSHA requirementsExperience with emergency response and management EEO

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $170,300 - $260,000 per year salary. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
