Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Four years of experience working as a WIC Clinic Nutrition Educator or in patient care; OR Twelve semester hours in food and nutrition or dietetics plus three years of experience working as a WIC Clinic Nutrition Educator or in patient care; OR An associate's degree in nutrition, dietetics, human ecology, family and consumer science, health promotion, pre-medicine, or nursing plus two years of experience working as a WIC Clinic Nutrition Educator; OR A bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics, human ecology, family and consumer science, health promotion, pre-medicine, or nursing. Job Concepts Function of Work: To plan, promote, and implement health education programs. Level of Work: Experienced. Supervision Received: General from a Public Health Nutritionist or an agency administrative official. Supervision Exercised: None. Location of Work: Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH), Office of Public Health (OPH). Job Distinctions: Differs from lower-level nutrition education jobs by serving as a Competent Professional Authority (CPA) with the Louisiana WIC Program. Differs from the Public Health Nutritionist 1 by the absence of a provisional Louisiana Dietitian/Nutritionist license. Examples of Work This Health Educator position is assigned to a Parish Health Unit in Region 4 of the Office of Public Health and Functions in the special supplemental food program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to assist WIC Participants in acquiring nutrition knowledge, skills, and behavior necessary for achieving adequate diets. 65%WIC Certification/Re-certification and Laboratory Duties •Interprets state policy and procedure regarding the federally funded Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). •Maintain a working knowledge of all WIC program policy and procedure changes. •Maintains up-to-date professional expertise in all areas of nutrition including breastfeeding education and support. •Provide certification and re-certification services to eligible clients. •Complete VENA-based nutrition assessments and recommend the appropriate WIC food package based on the client’s nutrition risk codes. •Counsel clients and/or their family with the most up-to-date information nutrition risk codes identified. •Refer clients to other services such as physicians, food assistance programs, and high-risk counseling as needed. •Maintain knowledge of breastfeeding practices and promote breastfeeding with appropriate information and materials. •Refer all prenatal and breastfeeding clients to the breastfeeding peer counselor program. •Refer special formula requests to the high-risk nutritionist as necessary. •Perform anthropometrical measurements and lab data (hemoglobin) on WIC clients as necessary to facilitate the certification and/or re-certification process. •Perform walk-in services (formula changes, Breastfeeding services) as needed and document appropriately. •Assist in promoting and implementing WIChealth.org, the new WIC online education tool for participants and their families. 25%Other Duties •Provide in-service training to health unit staff on all anthropometrical data collection, documentation, and interpretation. •Provide technical assistance and in-service training to clinic staff in the area of computer data entry as it pertains to WIC certification, re-certification, and WCFI services. •Assist in answering phone calls about questions or problems regarding the WIC program. •Network with physicians, nurses, and other service providers, through outreach, to develop and implement an informal/referral system to identify eligible participants and introduce them to the WIC program. •Perform clerical duties when there is a clerical staff shortage or as needed if requested to do so by the supervisor. •Schedules appointments for new and returning clients and registers enters, and updates required data obtained from clients during the intake interview process to improve clinic flow and customer service. •Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor when the Nutrition Educator is unavailable. 10%Training and Disaster Duties •Participates in routine policy training as federally mandated by the WIC program. •Travel to assigned WIC locations to perform essential duties •Participates in planning for nutrition-related issues during disasters. •Reports for duty, as assigned, immediately following a disaster, which may include working in shelters and providing nutrition services to evacuees and field staff. •Work post-disaster to ensure that WIC services are delivered efficiently.
