BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 28 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
The International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City (IRC-SLC) Health Programs promotephysical and psychological well being by facilitating access to healthcare services and providing education and advocacy.
SCOPE OF INTERN WORK:
The Health Promotion Program focuses on preventive health education and increasing refugees’ health literacy and access to health care resources. The program provides a series of health and wellness classes. The Health Promotion intern(s) will provide direct support to the Health Promotion Specialist in teaching Navigating the Healthcare system classes, organizing groups, transporting clients to medical appointments, and other special projects.
COMMITMENT:
10 – 20 hours per week, January13th – April 25thRESPONSIBILITIES:
Teach Navigating the Healthcare System classes to adult refugee clients Schedule health classes Enter and track data in Salesforce cloud comuting system Take at least 1 transport and/or facilitate 1 bus orientation per week Assist in other health promotion areas as assigned Participate in health program meetings Support the IRC–SLC office with other duties as assignedLEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Gain professional experience working in the public health sector. Gain skills in assessing the public health needs of different communities. Gain public speaking experience through teaching health classes to clients.
