Summary The incumbent works as a Health Technician primarily in the clinical laboratory as a phlebotomist, but also supports the laboratory with clerical, accessioning and processing, and other testing duties. The incumbent works directly for the Laboratory Manager, who reports to the Associate Director of Patient Care Services and Nurse Executive. The Laboratory service employs 10 employees. Responsibilities Major Duties include but are not limited to: Answers incoming calls for Laboratory Services. Quickly finds and relays accurate information or refers the caller to technical personnel. Performs disposition of add-on orders. Duties include performing observation-based screening, collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel. This may involve obtaining patient health history, chief complaints, medication history, and information about health-related or high-risk conditions that may impact the patient's health status. Functions as a resource person and troubleshooter for clerks and medical staff in executing Vista order entry and results options. Reprints, mails, and faxes laboratory reports to referring laboratories. Maintains files of referral lab results, requisitions, pending and recurring orders, cytology, and surgical pathology requisitions. Maintains a clean, organized, and safe collection and processing workspace, assuming primary responsivity for ensuring adequate levels of supplies are readily available for the collection of clinical specimens. Performs inventory of processing area and orders supplies as necessary. Assists with the collection and correlation of workload and other statistics, quality control and monitors quality assurance data. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: processes requests for Laboratory testing; verifies the individual denoted on the request and labels all tubes with the patient's name, social security number, date, and time; Uses laboratory reference test catalogs, identifies, and processes for infrequently ordered send out tests; utilizes a variety of phlebotomy techniques to drawing and redrawing blood; prepare the specimen or patient for testing, prepare reagents (if necessary), perform test procedures, verify the accuracy of the results, and report results. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and year ending dates AND hours worked per week. OR, Education: Four (4) years of education above the high school level leading to a Bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position (i.e. medical technologist, nursing, etc). (Transcripts Required) OR, Combination: An equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total qualification requirements for this grade level. This education must have been obtained at an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. To determine if you met these requirements, total your qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine your education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. For example, an applicant has 8 months of GS-4 level specialized experience and 80 semester hours of college. The applicant meets 67 percent of the required experience and 33 percent of the required education (i.e., 20 semester hours in excess of the first 60 semester hours). The applicant meets 100 percent of the total requirements and is qualified for the position. (Transcripts Required) To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-04. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
