Summary

Position Highlights:

The Health Unit Coordinator is responsible for the overall flow and coordination of activities within the patient care unit. Maintains good public relations with patients, visitors, staff, and physicians, while preserving confidentiality of information related to the organization. Functions as preceptor for on-boarding newly hired Health Unit Coordinators, including department onboarding and unit-specific training. Responsible for accurate and timely submission of time and attendance for team members according to payroll system policies and procedures.

The Ideal Candidate:

Experience working in a hospital or ambulatory care setting.  Health Unit Coordinator or Unit Secretary experience preferred.

Responsibilities: 

Coordinates with other departments and team members to address patient care needs. Maintains and updates patient records as appropriate. Answers phones and responds to patient requests. Schedules follow-up appointments for discharged patients. Orders supplies, including specialty supplies, and enters work requests and completes other related administrative tasks. Responsible for reviewing and ensuring proper charge capture according to unit charge master. Serves as minute taker for unit staff meetings.

Credentials and Qualifications:

High School Diploma/GED. Knowledge of general clerical practices and procedures. Knowledge of medical terminology. One (1) year experience working in a hospital or ambulatory care setting preferred but not mandatory. Recent hospital experience as a Health Unit Coordinator or Unit Secretary also preferred.
