DescriptionJob DescriptionHearing and Vision Technicians 1 provide preschool and school-age hearing and vision screening in Michigan according to the Public Health Code; Act 368 of 1978; Part 93. Hearing and Vision Technicians are employed by local health departments (LHDs) and comprehensively trained by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to provide screenings in the LHD service area.Under limited supervision, performs preliminary and re-test hearing and vision screening at various schools throughout Out-Wayne County to detect hearing or vision abnormalities in children. Interprets and records test results and performs any necessary follow-up by letter, phone, or conference. Travels to various schools throughout Out-Wayne County. Utilizes current county-wide and department-specific software to complete assignments.Responsibilities Required TasksProvide preliminary hearing screening to children and adolescentsProvide vision screening to children and adolescentsDocument results of screening correctly and in a timely mannerEnter data into pre-approved forms and databases. Assist with generating monthly reportsCorrectly complete and submit necessary forms for each program, times sheets, and activity sheets in a timely mannerSchedule screening sessions in the communityMake follow-up telephone calls regarding screening sessions, results, and referralsQualifications Educational/Experience RequirementsHigh School Diploma or equivalentOne (1) year of paid or volunteer experience working with children in a medical setting (Doctor's office, clinic or hospital) or nine (9) months of paid or volunteer experience working in an education setting (Daycare, after-school program, preschool, elementary/secondary school, school lunchroom and school library)A valid state of Michigan driver's license with safe and acceptable driving recordAn automobile available for transportation during work hours on a reimbursed mileage basisAttend the two-week hearing threshold and the one-week vision training courses provided by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and obtain the hearing threshold and vision certification within two years of hire, if trainings are offered by MDHHS or as soon thereafter
