Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on light and heavy duty fleet vehicles and equipment, including, but not limited to: transit coaches, trucks, passenger sedans, minivans, refuse trucks, heavy duty trucks, landscape equipment, tool carriers, skid loaders, trailers, back hoes and utility vehicles. The selected candidate will:

Inspect vehicles and equipment to identify the cause of errors or defects. Service, repair, adjust, and perform testing on motorized vehicles, and equipment system components and equipment, that operate primarily on the basis of mechanical principles. Operate, maneuver, and drive mechanized equipment such as forklifts, passenger vehicles, transit coaches, landscape equipment, heavy duty vehicles, machinery, and trucks. Provide excellent customer service. Maintain daily work activity including vehicle and equipment maintenance records.Responsibilities* Perform maintenance and repairs, including disassembly and reassembly, of auxiliary and stationary equipment and parts. Operate a wrecker. Bend, straighten, fabricate, weld, and repair components as necessary. Read and interpret diagnostic test results using meters, gauges, and computerized and handheld diagnostic equipment. Raise trucks, buses, or other equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists. Inspect and repair brakes, including air brake systems, steering mechanisms, transmissions, engines, and other components of the university's fleet of vehicles and heavy and light duty equipment. Perform routine maintenance, such as oil changes, lubrication, and electrical system service. Repair or replace malfunctioning components, parts, and other mechanical or electrical equipment. Test drive vehicles to ensure proper operation and verification of repairs. Examine and adjust protective guards and other safety devices. Diagnose and repair automotive and heavy duty electronic control systems. Maintain records of repairs in web-based fleet management system. Train and coordinate the work of assigned assistants. Other maintenance duties as described by supervision.Required Qualifications*Minimum three (3) years of recent related truck, bus, and heavy equipment repair experience.Mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance, including computerized diagnostic equipment.Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote safe operation of a transit coach, vehicle fleet and heavy equipment maintenance operation, and protection of people, property, and institutions.Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by road transportation, including the relative costs and benefits.Ability to convey information effectively, both orally and in writing.Ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.DOT drug and alcohol testing.Desired Qualifications* ASE or State of Michigan certification in several areas of automotive and heavy duty repairs. Operational knowledge of Windows based computer systems. Superior customer service skills. Ability to adapt to multiple shifting priorities. Knowledge of, and experience with, alternative fuel vehicles, i.e. E85, biodiesel, diesel electric, and gasoline electric hybrid vehicle systems.Licensure & Certification

Valid driver license with a clean record, and ability to obtain a Commercial Driver License, B Group, Passenger endorsement, and no air brake restrictions within the probationary period is required. *NOTE: Driver license number must be included in application to be considered.*

Afternoon Shift, Monday through Friday.

Work schedule 2:30 PM - 11 PM
