Heavy Equipment Operator

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Field Maintenance Supervisor, operates heavy equipment to perform public works projects, road maintenance, and construction activities.

 Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Operate on and off-road vehicles and equipment including bulldozers, motor graders, backhoes, wheel loader, trenchers, cranes, salt spreader truck, rotary broom, water truck, dump truck, bobtail truck, sweeper, compactors, tractor weed mower, pump truck and flatbed truck. Demonstrate adaptability and resourcefulness in the safe and efficient operation of vehicles for a variety of assigned purposes including towing, backing, and transport of other vehicles and equipment; hauling sand, aggregate, and other material; pumping and draining water; maintenance of rights-of-way and unpaved road and parking surfaces; and cuts weeds and grass along tribal roads. Maintain a daily work log. Report any issues concerning equipment. Operate pumps, hydrants, hoses and other auxiliary equipment as desired or directed. Check equipment daily to maintain efficient and safe operational status including inspection and testing of tire conditions and air pressure, brakes, mechanical and engine fluids, water, brake lights, head lights and such other systems and equipment as required. Maintain the safe working condition of all equipment; conduct pre-trip and required periodic inspections of equipment; perform minor repairs on equipment and promptly report the need for major repairs to the Field Maintenance Supervisor. Perform duties of a laborer including breaking, mixing, and placing concrete and asphalt using hand and power tools; installing pipe sections, valves and fittings; lifting and loading material and equipment; clearing and cutting trees, brush, and trash; and other tasks as required. Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed. Perform heavy and semi-skilled construction maintenance and labor work when not operating regularly assigned equipment. Operate vehicles under adverse weather conditions. Any excavation, utility damage or repair will require the use of the Heavy Equipment Operator until project is complete. 24 hours a day availability. Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility for all team members and are expected to report to work based upon the assigned schedule each day in accordance with the Attendance Policy for Pueblo of Sandia. 

 Additional Responsibilities

Performs additional duties and responsibilities as necessary or assigned. Strong interpersonal skills with all direct work associates as well as networking with all Team Members is essential throughout Pueblo of Sandia whether they hold public facing and/or back-of-the-house positions. Works on a schedule other than the normal work hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Work hours subject to change including weekends and holidays and ranch property work required.  Works on a 24 hour on call schedule. Due to job locations, breaks including lunch may be required to be taken on site.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Must have considerable skill and ability in the operation of heavy equipment and a general knowledge of construction and vehicle safety. Must possess the ability to work with the equipment, tools and materials specified in this classification. Ability to demonstrate practical skills in operating the following equipment required:  backhoe, dump truck, loader, motor grader. Ability to demonstrate practical skills in operating the following equipment desired:  bulldozer, crane, water truck. Demonstrate ability to operate machinery in support of utility construction and in performing street and storm drain maintenance and repairs. Ability to operate front-end loader and pavement breaker. Ability to read and understand blueprints and grade-to-grade stakes. Ability to work on steep slopes. Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Ability to communicate with others, make sound decisions, and to assimilate and understand information, in a manner consistent with the essential job functions. Ability to operate assigned equipment and vehicles. Performs other projects and tasks as assigned. Ability to perform duties considering the full use of Personal Protective Equipment without restrictions. Pass annual physical, and more repetitive UA. Demonstrate annual performance practical exercises with Sandia owned equipment Must be able to read, write and understand written and oral instruction in English.

   Education And Experience  

Required

High School Diploma, GED certification or equivalent. Five (5) years general road construction experience including the operation of various types of heavy equipment. Two (2) years experience of full-time operation of backhoes and/or graders.

Preferred

Experience as a Crane, Bulldozer operator.  Experience as job foreman, superintendent, or Project Manager on excavation projects. Experience in planning for road construction safety and awareness for signage, flagging, traffic planning.

Note:  Relevant work experience or education may be substituted to satisfy education and/or work experience. 

License/Certifications/Registrations

Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico CDL, class A license.

Performs work both indoors and outdoors. Most vehicle cabs are enclosed and may or may not have heating and air conditioning units. Work in extreme weather conditions is required. Perform clean up after natural disasters or tribal emergencies. Workers are exposed to intermittent noise and vibration factors. Workers are exposed to exhaust fumes, dust, and mist. Work is conducted primarily during daylight hours. Work is performed on even or uneven terrain, while operating equipment and performing general labor work. Surfaces may be wet or dry, muddy, paved or dirt roads. Grease or oil may be found on working surfaces. Work may be performed on inclines. Work hazards include gas/electrical lines, vehicle traffic, and exposure of skin to gasses and fumes.
