BASIC PURPOSE:\n
Operates heavy equipment and vehicles.\n
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:\n
Works under the general supervision of the departmental Manager or Supervisor.\n
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: \n
Exercises close supervision of skilled laborers and laborers as assigned.\n
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:\n\nOperates a variety of heavy equipment such as, but not limited to, backhoe, front-end loader, cranes, tractor cab and trailers, excavators, pumps, generators, and pneumatic tools.\nOperates equipment for excavations for valve replacement, pipeline installation, leak repair, and other miscellaneous excavations.\n Installs trench boxes, mechanical shoring systems, and other support systems for the safety of excavations.\n Assists mechanics in the maintenance and repair of heavy vehicles and equipment as needed.\n\n
SECONDARY DUTIES:\n\n Promotes and participates in the cross-functional work practices.\n Trains peers and subordinates as requested.\n Performs related duties as required.\n\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:\n
Education and Experience:\n\nBasic reading, writing, mathematical, scientific and oral communication skills normally attained through a high school education or the equivalent: and\nConsiderable knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the maintenance and safe operation of a wide variety of heavy and\/or specialized maintenance and construction equipment and vehicles as acquired through five (5) years experience; and\nExperience in urban utility excavation, construction, and installation, or\nAny equivalent combination of education and experience.\n\n
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:\n\nAbility to follow oral and written instructions \n Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.\nAbility to operate heavy equipment for extended periods in a variety of climatic conditions.\n\n
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:\n\nValid Massachusetts Class A Commercial Driver's License.\n\n
Department of Public Safety Hoisting Engineer's Licenses as follows:\n\n1B Hoisting License (Telescoping Boom with Cables Crane and 2A Hoisting License (Front End Loaders, Backhoes & Excavators) required at time of hire.\n3A Hoisting License (Overhead Cranes and Air or Electric Powered Cranes), 4E Hoisting License (Catch Basin Cleaners), and 4G Hoisting License (Specialty Lawn Mowers) to be obtained within six months of date of hire.\n\n
\n\nMust demonstrate proficiency for operating heavy equipment including but not limited to:\n\n50 ton Linkbelt crane\nVolvo tracked excavator\nTractor cab and lowboy trailer\n10 wheel dumps with tagalong trailer\nVarious types of backhoes (JCB, Caterpillar, John Deer)\nFront End Loader\nTruck Mounted crane\n\n\n\n
Complete productivity improvement competency-based training program related to ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES as outlined above and successfully demonstrates required competencies.\n
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:\n
Motor vehicle, specialized maintenance and construction equipment, hand tools, hoist, mobile radio.\n

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud in field settings and loud at other work locations.\n
