Job Summary

The Helicopter Operations Specialist supports the Company’s production and maintenance of reliable power by conducting helicopter power line construction and maintenance. This role will perform the following duties: Helicopter Camera Operator, Helicopter Hoist Operator, and ground-based support for helicopter construction projects (rigging, landing zone selection and preparation to ensure safe operations beneath and around helicopters). This role applies applicable Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 91 and Part 133 regulations; safe work practices in helicopter external load operations including construction/maintenance standards, methods, techniques, tools and equipment as they relate to helicopter work methods within the utility (electric generation, transmission, and distribution environment), along with company policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:

Performs as the Helicopter Camera Operator on Duke Energy Helicopters for scheduled and non-scheduled patrol and reconnaissance flights capturing HD Video, Pictures, IR and LiDAR. Processed High Definition Data as required. Performs and or coordinates the required  maintenance and software updates on the Camera.

Performs as the Helicopter Hoist Operator on Duke Energy Helicopters for power line construction work. Hoisting Linemen and or equipment  as needed for power line construction and or other projects on the Duke Energy System.

Finalizes job site readiness, develops and submits the Congested Area Plan (CAP) to the Chief Pilot for approval, ensures that applicable permits are filed and approved, consults with client work crews and coordinates external-load equipment, rigging, and ground support requirements. Supports the Helicopter Pilot during field operations with ground coordination and aircraft fueling on site. Transports aircraft fuel to/from work site (requires Class A w/Hazmat).

Maintain long line rigging, harness equipment, Hoist and supplies in a manner that promotes safety and effective industry best-practice field operations.

Basic/Required

High School/GED

Preferred Qualifications

Sensor Operator experience.

Prior experience as a utility industry crewmember, Helicopter Operations Specialist or applicable similar rotor-wing operational experience.

Recent experience conducting operations in the Wire Environment.

Familiarity with and use of various PC software applications to include (but not limited to): MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Sharepoint

Post flight processing of video/data, and thorough understanding of sensor theory applications.

Knowledge and demonstrated practice of Crew Resource Management (CRM) in an active aviation environment

3 or more years’ experience evaluating  landing zones (LZ), offsite aircraft operating areas, and remote aircraft operations

Helicopter Camera Operator Experience

Helicopter Power line construction experience

Helicopter Hoist Operator experience

Thorough knowledge of FAR Part 133 (External-Load and Congested Area) Operations.

Intermediate-advanced knowledge of, and experience in industry-accepted best-practice approaches for the rigging of external loads to be lifted by helicopter. Includes demonstrating a thorough understanding of helicopter flight characteristics while performing external load operations

Flying in the Wire Environment Training.

Safety Management System experience.

Working Conditions

Field Mobility Classification – Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.

Operate Duke Energy helicopters across the Duke Energy system: NC, SC, FL, IN, OH, KY, TN

Be available to fly Mon-Friday 8am to 5pm (unless the schedule changes)

Be on call for weekend duty once every 4 weeks

Specific Requirements

Hold (or obtain within 12 months of employment) a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with HAZMAT, Cargo Tank, and Air Brakes endorsements
