High School HSSRI – Joint Global Change Intern [Academic]
**Overview** The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security. **Responsibilities** Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking ambitious, high-caliber sophomore or junior high school students for intern assignment within the High School Student Research Intern (HS SRI) Program. This internship provides an opportunity for students interested in preparing for careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM - or Computer Science) to work during the **academic year** with a scientist/mentor in a specified research area. Students attend regular classes in their school for half a day and work up to four hours a day, five days each week at the Laboratory. Students must be part of a required work-based learning class. HS SRI is a 36-week program, estimated based on start date; the anticipated start date for academic cohort will be **August 26, 2025.** The student's primary area of work will be with an existing database on soil respiration (the natural flow of CO2 from the soil to atmosphere) studies made worldwide. After an extensive orientation period, the student will update the database with recently-published data. This is more than simple data entry and requires careful reading and checking in collaboration with the primary mentor, Dr. Ben Bond-Lamberty. Work later in this year will branch out to R programming and data visualization. ******HOW TO APPLY****** To have a complete application package, the (2) listed items below are required and must be uploaded correctly per the steps below for consideration: Step 1: Upload Resume or CV in “Resume” section only (note: If applying to multiple positions, the most recent resume uploaded will be used for all positions an applicant applies to).
