Description of Work
The High School Intern Program offers students in good academic standing the opportunity to work one semester or consecutive semesters as interns in the various fields at the Department of Transportation. Students learn about the work performed at NCDOT and gain valuable exposure. Based on need, there will be internship positions available for those in a variety of curriculums. Numerous candidates will be selected from this posting for positions statewide. Through this continuous structured program, you will gain exposure to a variety of opportunities in professional work experience that connect classroom experiences and potential career choices within NCDOT. You will have the opportunity to gain experience in several career disciplines such as Accounting, Administration, Automotive, Construction Maintenance, Customer Service, Electronics, Engineering, Horticulture, Human Resources, Management, Public Works, Safety, and Transit. The NCDOT not only designs and maintains highways, but also manages other modes of transportation that you will be given the opportunity to explore: Aviation, DMV, Ferry, Global TransPark, Highways, Integrated Mobility Division, Ports, Rail and Turnpike. While service to state government agencies is a valuable outcome of this high school internship program, the program's primary focus is to provide opportunities for students to build career-enhancing and leadership skills while benefiting from the civic experience.
