High-Speed/mm-Wave ASICs & Systems Research Lead

The Technical Department Head of the High-Speed/mm-Wave ASICs & Systems Research will lead & work directly with other Bell-Labs researchers and Nokia business divisions to define novel architectures, perform system analysis and design high performance integrated circuits for wireless, wireline & optical communication applications up to and beyond 100GHz. As part of their role, the technical department head will be responsible for planning, designing, simulating, and measuring various high-speed analog/mixed signal ICs, across a broad application space in nano-scale CMOS/BiCMOS technologies. 

The Technical Department Head will also lead a group of expert researchers through their career development, offer technical leadership, personal growth and accountability within Bell Labs and Nokia as a whole. The Bell Labs technical leadership role is the ideal merge of scientific expertise and people leadership skills.

Technical Qualifications

Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering with minimum 7-years of work/research experience OR Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with minimum 11-years of work/research experience.Strong hands-on experience and publications in the design, layout and testing of ultra-high-speed analog, digital and mixed-signal circuits implemented in nano-scale CMOS and SiGe BiCMOS technologies.Experience in design, modeling and simulation of millimeter-wave wireless and transceivers, data converters and PLLs.Experience in high-speed circuit simulation and characterization using Cadence Spectre, Agilent ADS or GoldenGate and 3D EM simulators.Experience in system modeling and system link-budget analysis using MATLAB or Cadence.Experience in mm-wave testing and characterization using network analyzer, spectrum analyzer, high-speed oscilloscope, etc.

Demonstrable leadership experience with strong interpersonal & coaching skills.Conflict resolution, accountability management, employee guidance & training.Strong problem solving (technical & otherwise), excellent time management, involved team player, self-motivated, creative thinking and strong English verbal communication and technical writing skills.Excellent communication/presentation skills to both researchers as well as Nokia executive & senior leadership.The ability to establish a strong relationship with Nokia leadership across the entire organization & varying disciplines.

Identify strategic industry partners & manage relationships with customers, vendors & competitors.

You will:

Development of next generation communication systems intended for 5G/6G, point-to-point backhaul & mm-wave/near-THz phased arrays.Optical communication ASICs & systems design to push the boundaries of coherent optical links.New sensing & sensor fusion (multi-modal) architecture design for emerging enterprise, industrial & robotic applications.System and circuit level design reviews & technical discussions across a wide range of expertise & domains.Establishing external relationships & develop new R&D proposals for government and/or external partnerships.Resource management including state of the art measurement equipment, CAD tools and end-to-end design flow.Engagement, close collaboration, and technology transfer to various Nokia business units.

The technical lead must have hands-on expertise in millimeter-wave circuit design and testing, demonstrated knowledge of RF, microwave millimeter-wave and mixed-mode design techniques and hands-on experience in performing high-frequency measurements. Familiarity with current wireless and wireline modulation formation formats and related transceiver architectures is required.
