High Voltage Electrical Technician

The High Desert Power Project is a 3x1 combined cycle facility with a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Water Treatment Plant. Major equipment includes 3 Siemens 501 FD3 Combustion Turbines with Alstom Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG's), Toshiba 330 MW Steam Turbine/Generator, Actiflo Clarifier, Cold Lime Softening using Microfiltration, Reverse Osmosis, and HPD Forced Circulation Crystallizer.

Opportunity Summary

The High Voltage Electrical Technician role is responsible for the reliable inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance of critical high-voltage systems, including those up to 230KV, as well as switchyards, with a strong focus on safety and system performance. Leveraging expertise in the installation, repair, and design of electrical circuits, the technician plays a vital role in maintaining and optimizing equipment reliability. Additionally, the position requires troubleshooting advanced control systems, managing DC battery backup systems, and ensuring strict compliance with safety protocols to enhance operational efficiency.

Primary Functions

Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain motors, generators, transformers, switches, control equipment, wiring, electrical signal systems, and communication systems, including instrumentation specific to ZLD water treatment processes. Perform corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance on electrical equipment, including high-voltage systems up to 230KV and switchyards, consistent with electrical safety practices. Perform journey-level electrician work, including the installation and repair of electrical wiring, equipment, and controls. Design, install, repair, and splice circuits, conductors, buses, and shielded cable, including conduit installation and support. Create sketches, drawings, and designs for electrical circuits. Troubleshoot, test, and repair advanced control circuits such as backup fuel, load shedding, boiler latch, unit tripping, and transfer circuits. Perform commissioning and calibration of control valves, and temperature, pressure, and level transmitters, including those integrated into ZLD systems such as reverse osmosis and crystallizer units. Maintain and troubleshoot DC emergency battery backup systems, including batteries, chargers, buses, disconnect switches, and locating DC grounds. Test and inspect electrical components, including current transformers, high-voltage wires, collector plates, and insulators, using tools like meggers. Inspect, adjust, test, and repair rotating and non-rotating electrical apparatus, including solenoids and electrical valve operators. Perform electrical system isolations according to industry standards and train others in electrical safety programs. Use tools, equipment, and materials responsibly, conducting basic inspections and preventive maintenance prior to use. Comply with all safety procedures and environmental permits to ensure accident-free operations. Maintain comprehensive and accurate records by documenting maintenance activities, repairs, and equipment performance. Communicate effectively with supervisors and colleagues about equipment conditions and plant performance, providing suggestions for improvement. Respond to emergencies as directed, at any time. Participate in planned outages by providing technical support for maintenance, repairs, and inspections of electrical systems. Perform oxyacetylene cutting, shielded metal arc welding (flat, vertical, and overhead positions), and carbon-arc cutting. Perform additional tasks reasonably assigned, including duties of other classifications when necessary.

Working Relationships

The High Voltage Electrical Technician reports directly to the Maintenance Manager and receives general direction from other plant management. This role involves interfacing with contractors and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) personnel to ensure necessary support and coordination.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing on feet for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, arc-flash protective gear, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.).  Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.  

Work Schedule

This position offers a Monday to Friday work schedule, during regular dayshift hours. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

Initial starting compensation will range from $45 to $55 per hour and will include an annual performance bonus.

Job Qualifications

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced electrical professional with extensive expertise in high-voltage systems, advanced troubleshooting capabilities, and a strong commitment to safety and operational excellence.

A high school or trade school diploma or the equivalent plus four years of journeyman electrician experience desired. Previous experience as a Journeyman Electrician, or relevant military background, preferably within a power plant or heavy industrial setting, showcasing a robust understanding of electrical systems. Extensive hands-on experience working with voltages up to 230KV, including maintenance and troubleshooting of high-voltage switchyards, and advanced knowledge of electrical safety practices and compliance standards. Proficiency in inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, and installing a wide array of electrical equipment, including motors, generators, transformers, switches, and control systems. Demonstrated proficiency in troubleshooting, testing, and repairing advanced control circuits, such as those for backup fuel, load shedding, and unit tripping, along with commissioning and calibrating control valves and transmitters for temperature, pressure, and level. In-depth understanding of and experience performing corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance on electrical equipment, including the use of tools like meggers and testing procedures for high-voltage components. Proven track record of executing electrical system isolations in accordance with industry standards, coupled with the ability to impart training on Electrical Safety programs. Strong personal computer skills to facilitate various tasks, including documentation, communication, and data analysis. Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment and demonstrate excellent organizational skills. Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver's license, ensuring it remains in good standing at all times.
