Job Description Summary:

Responsible for the accurate description of gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens, ensuring that all lesions, markings, and sutures are mentioned; sections the specimens according to the Pathology department protocols, and submits the entire specimen, or representative section for histologic preparation. Responsible for the embedding, cutting and staining of tissue sections from autopsy, biopsy, and research material, and for maintaining the efficiency of the Histology department. Under the supervision of the Assistant Supervisor/Histology Manager, the candidate is responsible for the assigned shift as scheduled. Incumbents are subject to overtime and call back by the department, as designated by the hospital.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Performs examination and dissection of Pathology specimens, on an as needed basis. Obtains and records specimens from surgery and assures their proper preservation and proper storage.

Operates tissue processing equipment.

Cuts, stains, and mounts tissue sections, including special fixation and stains.

Maintains records and files on all accessions.

Prepares reagents and stains.

Assists pathologist in cutting room or with renal biopsies.

Maintains work area, including frozen section room, and orders supplies and chemicals. Prepares daily records of tissue blocks, records of special stains, and a monthly frozen section report.

Performs established preventative maintenance of equipment used in the section, maintains records, and reports equipment failures to supervisor.

Accurately identifies specimens and maintains the identity throughout the preparation process.

Troubleshoots technical problems as directed by supervisor.

Contributes to the positive work climate and overall team effort of the department.

Pour-over and transport hazardous flammable waste (alcohols, xylene, and stains) to the hazardous waste drum collection area on the lab dock as needed (RCRA Hazardous Waste Management for Generators Certification required).

Performs immunohistochemical stains.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematics and basic knowledge of the sciences as normally acquired through an Associate’s Degree or the equivalent. Candidates with multiple years of Histology experience in immunohistochemical stains and special procedures, without a degree, will be considered.

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:

Certification as HT (ASCP).

EXPERIENCE:

One year of prior experience or training in a Histology Program and knowledge of the hospital and departmental policies. Certification as HT (ASCP).

Candidates with multiple years of demonstrated experience in immuno stains, without certification, will be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to operate tissue processing equipment and to cut, stain, and mount specimens.

Demonstrate the ability to perform all special stains including immunoperoxidase techniques.
