Histologic Technician

Job Summary: Performs a variety of technical laboratory tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, using knowledge of anatomical laboratory techniques, procedures and equipment. Utilizes knowledge of tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and specialized staining. Essential Responsibilities: + This position, knows and complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice in every interaction with patients, colleagues, providers, and leadership. Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to but not limited to medications, procedures, infection prevention, fall prevention, including consistent use of two patient identifiers and procedural time outs. Reports safety hazards, accidents and incidents, and unsafe working conditions promptly. + Tissue processing: Accurately and dependably cleans and operates tissue processors according to proper schedules. Embedding: Properly orients tissue into accurate mold in an acceptable time frame. + Microtomy: Prepares slides for microscopic examination and analysis for final diagnosis by the pathologist, while ensuring proper protocol is followed. + Staining: Processes required and requested stains in a timely and technically accurate manner. Ability to recognize staining problems and ability to troubleshoot, routine H&E, special staining and immunohistochemistry staining. + Prepares tissue specimens for pathologist to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Maintains cleanliness of work area, to include, cleaning and maintain embedding center, refilling paraffin dispenser, washing metal base molds, cleaning and dismantling microtome to maintain proper working order, etc. + Resolves conflict through finding a common ground and obtaining cooperation with minimal disruption. + Must be able to work independently and also must collaborate with others to ensure work processes and workflow meets organizational needs. Willingness to cross-train within department at Stapleton Support Services and other satellite facilities. Accepts any other duties as assigned by supervisor.Conducts him/herself in accordance with the principles of the Labor Management Partnership and the Bedrock Cultural Elements. Basic Qualifications: Experience + Minimum of one (1) year of experience in an anatomic pathology laboratory + Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived. Education + High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required. License, Certification, Registration + Histologic Technologist Certificate from American Society for Clinical Pathologists OR Histologic Technician Certificate from American Society for Clinical Pathologists Additional Requirements: + Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
