Summary: Follows standard established procedures, processes and stains tissue for examination and receives a diagnosis by a Pathologist while under general supervision.
Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
1. Cuts, stains histologic sections from surgical tissues for microscope examination by a Pathologist.
2. Maintains positive identification of all specimens throughout the process cycle.
3. Prepares gross surgical specimens.
4. Prepares a variety of special stains and solutions and uses them in the differential staining of tissue cell structures using appropriate procedures.
5. Maintains and compiles all necessary records and reports.
6. Performs and documents all necessary quality control procedures to ensure the reliability of all results.
7. Counts and records workload and other statistics.
8. Performs and documents all necessary instrument checks and preventative/routine maintenance.
9. Maintains current knowledge of the field by attendance at meetings, seminars, and lectures and by keeping abreast of current literature pertinent to the field.
10. Attends all mandatory in-service presentations including safety, right-to-know, and hazardous substance handling.
11. Respects patient confidentiality both at work and outside of the working environment.
12. Washes glassware.
13. Logs surgical specimens, labels slides, files slides and specimen blocks and maintains positive identification of all specimens throughout the process cycle.
